KITTERY, Maine —Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins says a new federal grant of $1 million for the Sarah Long Bridge replacement project should help expedite the construction of a new bridge.

Collins said Sunday the additional funding from the Federal Highway Administration will enable the Maine Department of Transportation to hire a construction manager/general contractor to hasten the design process and consult with the private sector.

$1 million? That won’t pay for the construction crew coffee breaks.

I think that’s the bridge connecting Kittery to Portsmouth, NH.

It is the route 1 bridge. Total cost is $158 million.
It is replacing a very old counterweight lift bridge.
This is the bridge just downstream of the I95 bridge.
The route 1A bridge, another counterweight lift bridge was replaced just a couple years ago.
There are major industries upstream from both of these bridges. The main one being a power plant that receives fuel from ocean going vessels.

This is why government spending will not decrease until the debt finally hits the fan. People like the pork that their politicians bring home. They don’t realize that while they are getting some other poor taxpayer’s money for their bridge, other states are getting their tax money for other bridges. It’s a giant con game with the politicians and bureaucrats running the scam to enrich and empower themselves. The taxpayers are the suckers. Nobody in other states should have to pay for a bridge in Maine.
