I don't view this as a materialist assault, but as an angelist assault. That is, the same rejection of our body/soul relationship, where we are souls merely inhabiting a body. This pops up in Gnosticism and Mormonism (with pre-existing souls). In Christianity, God INFUSES the human soul into the new body. It doesn't merely inhabit it. After final judgement, our bodies are resurrected, and reunited with our souls.
