Bobby Jindal invokes heritage in call for immigrant assimilation

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, in Europe for a trade mission, will preach the virtue and necessity of “assimilation” in an extended foreign policy speech Friday that will touch on his family’s own immigrant experience. Speaking to the conservative Henry Jackson Society in London, the potential Republican presidential candidate will contrast his parents’ decision to come to the United States from India 45 years ago with the mind-set of newer-generation European immigrants who subscribe to radical Islam. Story Continued Below “My dad and mom told my brother and me that we came to America to be Americans — not Indian-Americans,” Jindal will say, according to a copy of his prepared remarks obtained by POLITICO. “If we wanted to be Indians, we would have stayed in India. It’s not that they are embarrassed to be from India. They love India. But they came to America because they were looking for greater opportunity and freedom.” Highlighting the sectarian tensions in Paris, where he notes that some Muslims want to live in special autonomous zones and under religious Sharia law, the governor will link the turmoil there to the domestic debate over immigration. “It is my view that immigration can make a country stronger, or it can make a country weaker,” Jindal will say. “It really depends on whether the immigrants coming to your country are coming to join your culture, your mores, your laws, and to become a part of your history.”

Indians are not the problem here. They never blow up anything. Its the Muslims we need to get rid of.

It is hard to get rid of the hyphen if you put Allah and being Muslim ahead of being an American.

The end goal of Islam is a caliphate (dar al islam). So, unless they render America a caliphate, they are always at war (dar al harb).

Will Jindal ban or curtailing most muslim and unskilled immigration based on past results?

Vitter is great on immigration. I don’t see how Jindal or Perry get “out of the shadows” of the great Senators from their home states.

They never blow up anything. Its the Muslims we need to get rid of.

And also get rid of ANY government benefits(giveaways) for those coming into the country. It makes them much more likely to assimilate fast if they have to actually provide for themselves.

My wife is from Mexico. Her first language was Spanish. She learned English in High School so she could go to University in Texas, University of Texas El Paso. Her father paid out of country tuition when she went to University. Her sisters also went to University of Texas El-Paso. They also have seized the American Dream. Not one of her family has taken one damn dollar from the American Taxpayer in welfare.

She is proud of her Mexican heritage but she is an American first. She has multiple degrees, the last in computer science, she graduated number one in her class. She has been paid well for her talents.

Our great nation has provided her with the opportunity be anything she wanted to be. She seized the American Dream and has lived it.

In our home English and Spanish is spoken, but English is the primary language. I speak Spanish but my grammar is horrible. My grammer is also horrible in English and she is always correcting it. When she is mad at me, it goes straight to Spanish and it “ain’t pretty.”

She loves her heritage and is proud of it. However, her allegiance is to the United States of America.

This is what immigration should be like.

It's long past time to ban the damn hyphen!

Victor Davis Hanson nailed it: "Hyphenated-Americans have hyphenated-loyalties."

I’d also rather there be no hyphen. However, it is kind of fun to mess with people, referring to myself or my kids as European-American.
