What could possibly go wrong?

I remember reading a Scientific American article about an unusual disaster that occurred in Africa. Apparently, there was some sort of thermal inversion in a lake, and a large CO2 concentration built up there. The thermal distribution changed, the carbon dioxide came out of solution, the lake made a huge CO2 burp, and everyone around the shore died from suffocation.

Here, the pressurization is man made. What could go wrong?
