Pelosi: Time is now for gas-tax hike
The Hill ^ | 1/8/2015 | Mike Lillis

Posted on 01/14/2015 6:54:37 AM PST by EBH

"I can't respond to their proposal because I don't know what it is," Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol. "But I do think that if there's ever going to be an opportunity to raise the gas tax, the time when gas prices are so low — oil prices are so low — is the time to do it." At 18.4 cents per gallon, the current gas tax hasn't changed since 1993, and many environmental and infrastructure advocates are urging an increase to help eliminate annual deficits plaguing the Highway Transportation Fund. That fund is filled primarily by the gas tax, but the combination of rising infrastructure costs and more fuel efficient vehicles has created a shortfall that reached $16 billion last year.

In the upper chamber, Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) are pushing legislation to increase the levy by 12 cents over the next two years. And both Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, and James Inhofe (R-Okla.), head of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said they remain open to the idea.

“John Thune made the statement that ‘nothing is off the table,’ and I agree with his statement,” Inhofe told reporters Wednesday.

You really didn't think either party would let lower gas prices slip by did you?

Why can't they realize that the improved economy generated by lower gas prices will ultimately mean increased tax revenues, without them doing a single thing!

democrat Pelosi and the rest of the democrats are pure evil villains. These marxist cretins are out to destroy America , freedom and capitalism and they will do anything and say any lie to achieve their evil goal of socialism which is slavery

This new Congress is a real Republican congress with enough percentages to make it a Republican Congress. They won’t pass this tax increase on gasoline nor any other socialist measure no matter how many times the media pushes for it

Only if the taxes go down when the price of gas goes up again, as it surely will. We know that NEVER happens.

Old witch. Your power is over. Zip your lip. Americans are sick of paying for any whim the government wants. We are sick of the misuse of our tax dollars and we are sick of you people using our money like it’s your own. In other words, we are sick of business as usual in DC and plan to do something about it.

"But I do think that if there's ever going to be an opportunity to raise the gas tax, the time when gas prices are so low — oil prices are so low — is the time to do it."

Gas prices are not low, they are LOWER than the outrageous prices they were. There is no real reason that gas should be much more than it was ten or twelve years ago when it was just over a dollar a gallon.

What a bullshit argument

If gas prices are down ... you can be sure, it wasn't because taxes decreased, but the cost to produce and deliver gasoline was reduced.

Raising tax on gasoline now is a tax increase way out of line, especially when the market flips and the cost goes back up

NO ONE, relying on gasoline tax(es), has lost a single penny. Those entities are functioning now just fine (not going to get into the necessity of those entities, just commenting on the gas tax)

I CANNOT take any more new taxes!!!
I do fairly well running a single income household however these days it sure doesn’t feel like it. AT every single turn I (we) are taxed on everything and what isn’t taxed is regulated to the point the prices are elevated.
I’m sick of this shit..

Exactly, gas taxes are the most regressive taxes that exist.

And the people that steal ... er ... use that 70 cent haven’t lost a penny ... if the gas goes to a dollar ... the 70 cent will still be there.

they won’t pass any gasoline tax. you are basing this on an article that is propaganda . what socialist measure has the new congress passed ? NONE . get a clue.

What tax increase did the Republican congress in of 1994 to 2006 pass? none . instead they blocked hillarycare , blocked amnesty many times, blocked global warming legislation, blocked gun congtrol the democrats wanted. just because Pelosi and the media and democrats want a tax increase doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Well gee Pelosi, what ever happened to "We have to pass it to find out what's in it."?!

I gave an interview a few weeks ago where the price of oil came up. This was one of the risks I noted in the interview. As the price of gas falls, so do tax revenues. This will encourage politicians to raise gas taxes. They will not reduce them when the price of gas rises in the future. Everything will be more expensive.

Government engineered inflation.

I can’t think of a single tax increase that a Republican majority house passed ever. but you all say there is no difference between the parties. I’m not saying Republicans are so good or perfect what I’m saying is there is a difference. democrats the minute they got a super majority in the House and Senate immediately ALL Of them voted to pass Obamacare. not a single Republican voted for Obamacare which is also a tax increase and socialism
