Godwin's law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an Internet adage asserting that "As an argument grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches —​ that is, if an exchange (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism.

Godwins law is a joke. The analogy is completely valid in many many cases. But when someone makes it, someone wails “Godwins law” as though that actually means something significant.
