Godwin's law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an Internet adage asserting that "As an argument grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches that is, if an exchange (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism.

Godwins law is a joke. The analogy is completely valid in many many cases. But when someone makes it, someone wails “Godwins law” as though that actually means something significant.
