Dec. 23 marked a banner day in the Peyser/Phillips household. My daughter, Eliza Phillips, turned Sweet 16.
This was an excuse for her parents to enjoy mountains of cake (and a few nips of Scotch.) But it also brought us a sense of extreme anxiety. For soon my kid will choose a career. But like millions of parents, infamously including Mayor de Blasio, this seemed as good a time as any for me to sit my child down and give her the talk.
I warned her Do not join law enforcement.
This makes me sad.
Just as de Blasio sat down with his son, Dante, who is a year older than Eliza, for his special kind of talk he warned the half-black young man about the phantom dangers he faces at the hands of police I felt an urgent need to answer the mayors reprehensible rap.
I warned my daughter, who is white, about the very real dangers she might face in the employ of a department whose people the mayor has slimed.
In a news conference and on TV, de Blasio last month said he and his wife, Chirlane McCray, have drilled a message into Dantes head....

Remember when they thought Hilaria Baldwin was making a text during the funeral of James Gandolfini?
It was only an actor and the press went nuts.
What a stupid column. I still remember my Russian grandmother exploding when I said I wanted to be a teacher that if I did I would never get ahead. I still wish I had become a teacher.
Here’s more than you ever wanted to know about the Marxist-Communist who calls himself Mayor of New York City.

Good column. You missed the point.
The NYPD is a great job. It’s been around long before the current mayor and will be around long after.
Grandma meant well. Sure, you would have been fine as a teacher, but how could Grandma have foreseen the rise of the NEA?
Kind of like Obama, America, and the military.
That’s just wrong. A parent should never try to dictate the career choices of their children. Children should be brought up to follow their passions. Otherwise, you are setting them up for an unhappy life.
Sorry...not buying it. The only conversation she’s likely to have had with her daughter is which ivy league school would be best for her.
Right, And providing your child with information based on your experience as the elder in the relationship is the mark of a good parent. I didn’t hear Peyser say “I forbid” like the father in the Jazz Singer.
She said exactly what she should have.
FYI, my mother warned me against joining the military when I was a teenager. Told me I would be "throwing my life away" if I did do and refused to talk to me for weeks after I decided to do so anyway.
Glad I didn't listen to her, as she was way off base and joining the military was the best thing I ever did for myself.
His endorsements include not only Obama and the Clintons, but also such figures as Senator Charles Schumer , George Soros, editor of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University, and former ACORN head Bertha Lewis.
. While candidate de Blasio said that he is one part New Deal Democrat, he also partly a European Social Democrat and very ‘deeply influenced’ by liberation theology, which I learned a lot about in the years I worked on Latin America.
He is what he si....and just as with Obama the people failed to vent him and now are crying for what they got.
