My sister had an African American friend in High School. She had red hair and freckles, and was born in South Africa.

South Africa is a nation, Africa is a continent. The two you cited I would consider South African Americans, just as I would consider someone born in Japan but who has become an American citizen a Japanese American. But I personally would refer to them only as Americans unless there were a compelling reason to identify their native countries.

My original point, though, is that I only refer to people of the Negro race (fully or partially) as black, not African American.
