The bias against guns: What the media isn't telling you
Fox News ^ | January 9, 2015 | John R. Lott Jr.

Just two days before New Year’s, a 2-year-old accidentally shot and killed his mother at a Wal-Mart in rural Idaho. The victim was Veronica Rutledge, a 29-year-old concealed handgun permit holder. The child had reached into his mother’s purse. Massive news coverage ensued.

Tragedies like these make headlines. That’s understandable. But where was the news media on the previous day, when concealed handgun permit holders likely saved multiple lives?

— In Fargo, N.D., four people robbed a 36-year-old man and beat him unconscious. Fortunately, a permit holder stopped the attack. “The passer-by, who has a license to carry a concealed weapon, brandished his gun to end the robbery,” police reported.

— In Kissimmee, Fla., a church employee shot at a pastor after being fired from his job. The pastor had a permit and returned fire, wounding the attacker.

Weren’t these stories equally newsworthy? To save a stranger, a permit holder stood up to four attackers. Without the pastor’s concealed handgun permit, there could have been a mass shooting in a crowded church. That would surely have gotten massive national news coverage, but the pastor stopping the attack wasn’t considered a story.

The lopsided coverage . . . .

The story was unclear about the robbery in Fargo, in which a person stopped a robbery by brandishing. But the article referenced does not say whether the robbers just left and were then caught by the police, or if the concealed carrier *detained* them for the police.

A different article indicated that he did detain them for the police.

According to the research I’ve read, 1-2 million crimes a year are prevented/stopped by an armed citizen. More than 90% of the time, no shots are fired. The criminal either flees or surrenders.

CCPs are issued by the states/municipalities to individual state citizens. CCP is not yet a federally controlled process. The real change that could make it impossible for fedzilla to end CCPs would be for ALL states to recognize the CCP issued by any other state.

John: Do you honestly expect the mainstream liberal media to honestly report the news, esp. when it comes to the issues of guns and self-defense?

You’ll find more honesty in Dur Sturmer than you will in the NY Times, Wash. Post, LA Times, and MSM news networks.

I think I’ll burn my old press card in protest of this neo-Marxist, anti-American media cabal, or maybe I’ll wear it with pride and a placard saying, “The last honest pro-American journalist in Nam.”

{There were many other honorable American journalists in VN and Cambodia but I think you understand my symbol statement}

From what I have read and heard, there was plenty of coverage of the “pistol packing pastor.”

There was some. We are making some progress in the new media.

The bias in the old media is still very strong, but there is enough growth in the new media to overcome some of it.
