The conservative base does not get to vote for the Speaker; they do vote for the GOP candidate for President.
The speaker's race is but 1 of 1,000 examples in the last 10-20 years demonstrating how little the GOP think of its conservative base.
Not that it matters to me. I don't vote for liberals so there's very little attraction for me to today's GOP.
