Voting Present is a Vote For Pelosi
Redstate ^ | Jan 5, 2015 | Streiff

Some new members of the House of Representatives have pledged not to vote for Rep. John Boehner (R-OH)N/AN/A. Instead of casting their vote for someone, they claim they will vote “present.” They need to understand that doing so is a vote for Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)Heritage ActionScorecardRep. Nancy Pelosi11%House Democrat Average13%See Full Scorecard11%.

Under House rules, a Speaker is elected based on an absolute majority of votes cast for a person. There can be no plurality. The person elected Speaker must be elected based on an absolute majority of the votes cast.

If a member of the House of Representatives votes present, their vote is not considered. Consequently, each vote of present narrows the majority of Republicans and brings Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)11%11% that much closer to being elected Speaker.

There aren’t 218 democrats in the House. Therefore, she can’t win unless Republicans actually vote for her. The excerpted portion of the article is disingenuous.

I heard Louis Gohmert interviewed on Hannity today and he says that this isn’t true.

And we will notice a difference if Pelosi is speaker instead of Boehner?

A vote for Boehner is also a vote for Pelosi, imo.

I hope it’s not true. It would be so gutless - not unlike the current occupant of the White House.

You’re right, and I suspect that this idea is being touted by Boehner’s camp to scare people into supporting him.

Why do they vote for their leaders just after the Nov election ,they should wait until the new members are present

It’s not true. Gohmert went through the numbers to show that it’s impossible.

I think it’s a scare story to try to keep people from dumping Boehner.

“they claim they will vote “present.”

Showing their true colors right off the bat. “Present” says “I’m a chicken$%&* and can’t take a stand on anything so I’ll just hide over here”.

Yes, and maybe it’s a warning about how much trust we should put in Redstate as well.

the first order of business of each new congress is to elect a speaker. noting else gets done until this vote is taken.

Let me see if I understand this:

If they simply vote PRESENT, nancy gets their vote.

What if they vote PELOSI?

It would follow that she would then get TWO votes from that one Congressman.

Crazy world, that Congress.

I’m talking about the GOP ,they threw their support behind Boehner just after the election ,before they went on vacation before the new members could vote ,LOL rigged from top to bottom

You are wrong.

House in 2015 – R 234 D 201 Total – 435.

The Speaker needs to get 218, assuming all voted. 218 is a majority in 435.

Now assume 35 Rs vote present, all others vote Bonehead, all Ds vote Pelosi. The total voted is now 400, and 201 is a majority. Pelosi wins.

Instead of Present, they need to vote for an adult US Citizen. Doesn't matter who.
