NYC’s victory over lawlessness being reversed by anti-cop mayor

Taking back the streets was not always pretty and did not always go smoothly. Yet progress against the scourge of crime was undeniable from the start, and after two decades under Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg, a decisive victory was won. Hallelujah!

New York, formerly the ungovernable Rotten Apple, was reborn in the ashes of mayhem and murder. Life in virtually every neighborhood got better and better because even quality-of-life crimes were not accepted as inevitable. Investment follows safety, and the city shined like never before.

The mayors led, but rank-and-file cops did the heavy lifting, and the insignia of the NYPD became world-famous. It was the symbol of professionalism and success, and some of its honchos were drafted to lead other cities’ police forces, in the hope that, if they could make it safe here, they could make it safe anywhere.

Then came Bill de Blasio.

The Dinkins era offered so many useful social engineering tools to the Left. They want it back.

As a kid - my aunt took me into NY City - since she worked at one of the World Trade Center towers...this was 1980...and my impression back then...

The “Brooklyn Hipsters” aren’t going to like this new and expectable trend. The entire basis of the supercharged property values in NYC is the late 50’s statistical crime level (ushered in by Rudy).

Those moving into formerly “black neighborhoods” that are “coming up” are going to have to admit that “coming up” is code for “getting rid of the poor” and the they aren’t going any more, and will probably come back and come for them.

Pretty politically tone deaf — considering that it’s the police that separate the mob from the affluent politicians and the the powerful wealthy, not to mention the beautified Hollywood star.

Liberals love playing with fire.

"Gentrification" (affluent folks moving into formerly bad neighborhoods) is very much dependent on the effective control of crime.

De Blasio is going to usher in an era of de-gentrification (just as Brooklyn was becoming the new Manhattan and Queens was becoming the new Soho).

From the article:

“The turnout was a historic low, under 25 percent, and he managed to turn out those who shared his warped view that the victory over crime was illegitimate.”

My point: a high turnout wouldn’t have helped, as the city is controlled by the Democratic Party. IIRC, De Blasio’s closest rival was a dingbat Democrat in the primary.

The better joke would be “spare hair for the spare heir”.

Credit goes solely to Giuliani. Bloomberg just capitalized on what Giuliani did, lessened or otherwise eroded it. Which along with his petty tyrannies should strip him of any law and order legacy.

You are correct.

Bloomberg is an idiot who will be remembered for banning "Big Gulp."

And I will not take my family to New York for any reason. I avoid New York State if I can, I prefer to spend my money in places that I am welcome and I feel safer. Kudos to Ohio on reciprocity of CCW.

One way the NYPD could really screw the Mayor, is to screw the mayor's wealthy leftist supporters. Find out which wealthy NYC neighborhoods have the highest concentrations of big-bucks Dem donors. Then allow all sorts of vagrants and druggies to congregate there, by doing "quality of life" enforcement everywhere BUT in Dem strongholds.

Bill de Blasio is bringing the David Dinkins stewardship of NYC up to date. Both men were/are total incompetents as mayors, but de Blasio seems to be doing better at destroying the Big Apple faster and completely than Dinkins was able to do.

The areas around Barclays center should get interesting, as will those a few stations away.
