Ever-eloquent Mario Cuomo, a son of Queens who rode his rhetorical gifts to three terms as New York governor and tantalized Democrats by flirting with a run for President, died Thursday, two sources close to the family said. He was 82.

Cuomo passed away six hours after his oldest son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was formally sworn-in to a second term in Manhattan. The elder Cuomo was too ill with a serious heart condition to attend.

I don’t like to speak ill of the dead, but Mario Cuomo played a MAJOR role in pushing the legitimacy of abortion in this country.

One of the most embarrassing things I ever listened to was Mario’s “The Man from Hope” speech , ushering in Bill Clinton. The apotheosis of political BS, and that’s the primary ingredient, listed first on the label, of American Politics.

If you can’t speak well of the dead don’t - and so I won’t.

:-)

It reminds me of the one I heard about the inscription on a man's grave stone "I told you I was sick."

Cuomo's speech at the 1984 convention is ranked as one of the great political addresses of the 20th Century. Some in the crowd were reduced to tears.

Cuomo, who received two curtain calls, passionately illustrated the distinction between the haves and the have nots in his "Two Cities" address.

"A shining city is perhaps all the president sees from the portico of the White House and the veranda of his ranch, where everyone seems to be doing well," Cuomo said. "There's another part of the city, the part where people can't pay their mortgages ... and middle-class parents watch the dreams they hold for their children evaporate.”

Cuomo’s “wonderful” speech ridiculed Reaganomics. That was of course right when the Reagan-Kemp-Roth program was just starting to do its job. As Ronaldus Maximus later put it,
Now, I knew I was in for it when the hostile critics dubbed our economic plan Reaganomics. They said we couldn't do it. But while the naysayers complained, we went to work.

Today inflation has fallen from more than 12 percent to 1.8 percent for the last 12 months. Interest rates are down. Mortgage rates are down. And we've seen the creation of almost 11.7 million jobs in less than the last 4 years -- more jobs than Western Europe and Japan put together have created in the past 10 years. You know, I really, though, found out our economic plan was working when they stopped calling it Reaganomics.

In the cold light of day, Cuomo’s “masterful speech" was poppycock.

I didn’t know his parents were gay. RIP Governor.

I'm with you.

The man did a great amount of damage with the power entrusted to him.

Liberals abuse their power to shove their policies on people who don't want them. Then, when they die, their friends and cohorts demand that we shed crocodile tears for their idols.

Apart from his keynote address to the Democratic National Committee, Mario Cuomo was the sophist who provide cover for Catholic Democrats in elected office to ignore the church and support abortion on demand.
