It’s getting so anymore, that companies not only offer insurance for the spouse, but also for the “significant other”. So, if you live with someone, they could potentially get health insurance from you’re employer.
We might be better off simply abolishing the Licence or handing them out like tax stamp and changing the name to reflect the reality that they have little if anything to do with marriage.
They aren’t. What an happen in some cases is that someone is already legally married, and the church clergyman gives the license to them. However, there will still be those, such as atheists or others, who will at least demand a wedding, or at least a marriage license. If they happen to sue, don’t count on government opposing their wishes.
That’s an idea, and I do agree with you generally on this matter. The only problem is that there are people who will do it. Although honestly, the marriage license isn’t worth much in and of itself. That’s a large part of the reason why cohabitation without marriage is as popular as it now is in America, and even moreso in Europe. A lot of legal benefits nowadays are actually separate from the marriage license. There’s also increased taxes for you because you are married, and the liability of no-fault divorce. So put all of those things together, and you can see why fewer people get legally married.
You mean those religious ceremonies where the couples only go to church for 3 months before the service and are never seen there again?
My employer performed a random audit of employees who claimed to married and whose “spouse” was covered by the family-plan health insurance. The fraud rate was about 15%, and most of the fraudulent declarations involved other persons who weren’t even living with the employee.
I think if they are authorized by the state to act as the civil representative they have to have the civil side involved, whether they want to or not. Supposedly it’s against the law for them to marry anyone and not issue a civil license, as long as they have previously been approved by the state to issue licenses. I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted, but that’s the reason many religious authorities give when a couple wants to married without civil involvement, such as widowers who want to be married without affecting their current benefits.

I meant all religious marital ceremonies, so yes the superficial ones where the couple really isn’t into it would be included I suppose.

People will be able to get married elsewhere, the courts will still be required to issue licenses to any couple that meets the legal requirements. They can’t do the ceremony in the courthouse.
“Although honestly, the marriage license isnt worth much in and of itself. Thats a large part of the reason why cohabitation without marriage is as popular as it now is in America, and even moreso in Europe.”
When you put it all together people have no idea what the point of marriage is anymore. We still have this notion in our heads passed down from the Generations and motivated by our natural instincts that marriage is for life and children. But that of course is anything but the case under the laws of the state that now claim to represent marriage.
Anyone who understands the meaning and propose of marriage knows theses laws & contracts are not marriage. Just as ever growing shares of our population recognize them as increasingly pointless for what they really are. Really expensive legal contracts that serve increasingly little propose.
For this reason we know this lie of the State will in time completely collapse upon itself, just as it has been over the decades sense it was progressively conserved.
The union of our Grand Parents was marriage, it did not end for anything short of catastrophic reasons much less when people had a fight, or stopped feeling strongly for each-other and it was about securing children & family first and foremost Not the originating man and woman.
Thou the generations our cultures had learned to support, encorage, and even demand this sort of union among couples that had kids not for thier sake but for the sake of their children who needed it. For if it were not for children there would be no social propose to justify the freedom lost to marriage.
Today of course the State’s union is utterly pointless just as the original concept of marriage for life is now thought among our ignorant masses as barbaric and undesirable. The popular demand and concept of marriage today as a result of easy divorce and the political demands for it is that marriage is nothing more than people who choose to stay together. Well lets be frank Nobody needs an expensive and restrictive state licence to choose to stay with anther person. So slowly over time our culture is moving away from that flawed concept termed ‘marriage’ all the while the original concept is lost and forgotten having been written out of history with a modern day State lie that has usurped its name and now propose for something else utterly pointless in the grand scheme of things.
So yes Let us relabel that licence to reflect what it really is because it is NOT a marriage licence!
Get the Government out of the marriage "business" PERIOD.
Marriage is a religious institution blessed and ordained by God.
Government's intrusion into marriage has been purely for the purpose of taxation (marriage license fees, IRS...) and generally speaking nothing else.
Get the Government OUT of the marriage "business" period!
“Queers have no interest in children”
Sadly, that is not correct. Not only do many have kids from prior relationships, there are plenty of IV/surrogacy options, not to mention they can adopt kids in almost every state.
I’d venture a guess that there are more gays with kids than gays who are now getting married. And that’s in no small part how we lost the battle; when we made the issue about protecting children they said “okay.”
Maybe in the current and Western context it is, but the concept of "marriage" exists even in cultures that are not Christian and have no written languages, right?
of course but the joint reasons are pretty much the same
Family and money
