BTW, I think the shift in female and black respondents is particularly important because, as classes, they stand to benefit the most from the personal protection provided by firearms due to physical inequality and/or frequency of targeting by criminals.

Much the same dynamic which determines why a free market economy will always out-perform a planned economy among the members of any particular society, governs why a well armed society will be a safer society than one wholly dependent for protection by the government.
The more individuals are motivated to feel personally responsible for either their economic well being, or personal safety, the more intelligent & inspired will be their efforts in a constructive direction--also the better will be the ratio between the fire-power of the law abiding, versus the fire-power of the lawless.

I know what you are saying, but females of their race are actually the people least in need of self defense, especially white females.
If I were female, I would desperately want a gun, and I desperately want the females that I care about to have a gun, but the statistics are that men are the victims of crime.
