Exclusive: U.S. agency gives quiet nod to light oil exports - sources

(Reuters) - The main U.S. export authority is telling some oil companies that they should consider exporting a lightly processed form of crude oil called condensate without formal permission, according to people familiar with the discussions.

In conversations that may help clear the way for more overseas sales of U.S. shale oil, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has told companies seeking clarification on the legal status of so-called "processed condensate" that self-classification – whereby companies export their product without any formal authorization - could be a way forward, the people told Reuters.

An official familiar with the law said the agency's discussions did not represent a change in policy since self-classification is allowed under U.S. export controls and is a routine, common practice for the majority of exports.

Yet the message, though carefully couched as an informal suggestion, marks the first sign that the administration is becoming comfortable about allowing companies to work around the nation’s four-decades-old ban on exporting untreated crude oil...

It is condensate, not oil. Your car won’t run on pentanes.

And it has been run through a distillation tower. It is a product at that point.

Very misleading headline and article.

Sadly, on this topic, it has not been limited to them.

Writers trying to create a controversy when no change in regulations or policy have happened.

FTA: “Several lawmakers in both the House of Representatives and Senate have said that unless energy companies can export oil to Asia and Europe, the drilling boom will eventually choke on its own output.”

Isn’t ‘choking on its own output’ the objective of The Regime? The ban on export of crude oil that does not conform to our refineries’ capability needs to be repealed until such time that refineries are built to refine same.

I take it that you are not in favor of building more refineries so we could export a more expensive product?

I am not in favor of government selection of winners and losers in industry.

We currently export surplus refined product and that is great.

I think the more the government tries to manipulate industry, the more “damage” is done to industry, making us less competitive in the long run.

For specific examples:

I am not in favor of government imposing an import tariff on crude oil, for it harms our refining and petrochemical industries.

I am not in favor of banning export of crude oil while allowing export of petroleum products, because it harms our oil production industry.
