PLA drills sandwich Japan from north and south

Staff Reporter 2014-12-28 13:10 (GMT+8)

The People's Liberation Army appears to be strategizing on how it would sandwich Japan from the north and south in the event of a military conflict, says a Taiwanese military expert.

Ching Chang, a research fellow at Taiwan's Society for Strategic Studies, made the comments in response to a series of naval drills conducted by the PLA's three main fleets — the North Sea Fleet, the East Sea Fleet and the South Sea Fleet — earlier this month.

On Dec. 4, the North Sea Fleet's flagship Harbin Type 052 destroyer, the 054A Yantai and Yancheng multi-role frigates, and the Taihu Type 903 replenishment ship, traveled east through the narrow Osumikaikyo Strait southwest of Japan, before heading north to perform drills by passing through the Kuril Islands north of Japan and into the Sea of Okhotsk. Then on Christmas Day, the fleet passed through the La Perouse Strait north of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido before returning via the disputed East China Sea.

According to Chang, this was the second time a PLA vessel has passed through the La Perouse Strait. The first time took place last July during joint military drills with Russia, when China relied on its ally to help navigate through the waters. On this occasion, however, the North Fleet navigated through the strait by itself, suggesting that the PLA is not only capable of battle in cold regions but also growing increasingly familiar with Japanese waterways, Chang said.

Meanwhile, the East Sea Fleet has conducted drills near the Miyako Strait south of the main Japanese islands. For a week beginning Dec. 6, the PLA sent fighter jets into the West Pacific to participate in air-sea live-fire drills with six vessels of the East Sea Fleet. On Dec. 12, the fleet passed through the strait on its return to China.

Judging from the paths and timing of the PLA drills, it appears that China is strategizing how it would sandwich Japan from the north and south at the same time, said Chang, adding that this is the first time that such an exercise has been carried out.

PLA vessels have been increasing their activity around Japanese waters in recent years, partly to verify the response distance and capabilities of Japanese surveillance systems and partly to become more familiar with the region, Chang said. The most important reason, however, is to expand the PLA's influence in the Asia-Pacific as a show of strength to Japan and the US, he added, noting that the drills have a diplomatic meaning akin to Chinese maritime police boats regularly patrolling the waters surrounding the Diaoyutai islands (Diaoyu to China, Senkaku to Japan) in the East China Sea held by Japan but claimed by both China and Taiwan.

China has now become the world’s largest producer.

Exceeding America, and growing (rapidly).

Yet we buy, and we buy, and we buy.

It is time for Japan to become an overt nuclear power. Nothing short of that will stop the Chinese dragon. The Obama remade America will not be coming to help.

Japan is more than aware of this, but so is Taiwan, who likely feel that the Chinese pulled out and “dusted off” a Taiwan invasion scenario to work on Japan.

This is a problem with “message belligerence”.

Likewise the US Navy is keeping a very close watch on this from several angles: satellites, surface, and submarine surveillance. Oodles of very useful information can be obtained this way.

What is missing are the ‘wild card’ actors in the region, any of those nations China has bullied and threatened in the past. Though they do not have a great reach, they do have considerable potential for mischief at Chinese expense.

The list includes South Korea, less a ship sunk at Chinese auspices by North Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and others. Any of them could likely obtain a torpedo or some naval mines and carry out a low budget, high “plausible deniability” attack.

I think the Chinese are practicing for the real thing just as the Japanese did in the 30’s and 40’s

Good of the CHICOMs to alert Japan’s Defense Forces as to their war plan.

You can't keep your enemy completely in the dark if you were to undertake a full-scale war at some point. Building up forces, training, and exercises have to be done on a scale that cannot be hidden from your enemy.

“I think the Chinese are practicing for the real thing just as the Japanese did in the 30’s and 40’s.”

That is EXACTLY what Chine is doing.

Russia is on the brink of economic collapse and it has a Hitler-wannabe at its helm. China and Russia, once antagonists, are now good buddies. Both China and Russia know that they MUSDT mover within the next two years while King Putt is still president, as the pickings will be far easier.

Look for some bad sh!t happening within the next twenty months or so.

We? Gotta a mouse in your pocket? lol

I've had this one man boycott against Chi-com goods for over a decade.

You make a great point. Folks need to begin a boycott of Chinese goods here in America. This is the only way to get multi national corps attention.

True story....I went out to buy a new pair of boots. Went to two western outfitter stores. About 75% of the boots in these stores were made in China.

Justin, Tony Lama and the like yet the price of boots have actually gone up. If I purchase a pair-a-boots, it ain't gonna be made by slave labor or labor forced to work 16 hrs a day for pennies.

So, I looked up Justin/Tony Lama boot companies on FB. Found their customer service post your comment tingamajiggie and posted the following.

Something as unique as the American cowboy boot made in China? Seriously? I will never, ever buy a pair of boots from China. (send)

Immediately the LIKES started pouring in. After a few moments representatives from both boot companies chimed in with their canned responses. We at Justin/Tony Lama boot company are proud of our quality....blah blah blah.

Got their tension hehe

FWIW, each person on an individual boycott-China mission can do a lot of good. It's getting MUCH easier to find made-in-the-USA products. If you're not sure, call the toll-free numbers and ask. Make it very clear you will not buy made in China, and you are searching for ways to avoid companies that don't favor made-in-USA sources.

LL Bean is one that's really feeling the pressure from consumers. They're sensitive, they have some made-in-the-USA products, but not near enough. It's good time to hold them accountable to their heritage. JMHO

Their population is aging fast and they are not maintaining replacement levels. Please verify the stats yourself if you don`t believe, but not just on Japan, the entire western world, especially America.

Among the most ominous stats are American as the fastest growing demographic is Hispanic, which in itself isn`t too alarming till you examine the fastest area of Hispanic growth which is in the illegal alien population.

All thanks to Obozo`s amnesty made possible by the back stabbers of the republiCrat party. But hey, in a crony oligarchy you have to reward your financiers.

If the PLAN meets the Japanese fleet in anger on the high seas, they will live a short, but exciting life.

Thanx. Americans are the most resourceful, innovative folks on the planet.

We have witnessed the greatest transfer of wealth in world history from Americans to communist China. Enough already!

Americans were sold a lie. We want cheaper goods and jobs Americans won't do. Lying liars pushing their lies.

Americans NEVER supported destroying our way of life. We never supported polluting the crap outta the water and air in China/India. We did not sign up for slave labor, working folks 16-20 hours a day to fatten the pockets of corporations. Sorry, we just want a level playing field. Americans can kick the $h!t out of anyone in the world.

Our leadership sold us down the river for campaign $$$. Used to be a day our leaders helped protect American industry against unfair trade practices, monopolies, lopsided trade agreements.

Fight y'all! Stop purchasing cheap Chinese made goods. Look for the labels. Damn near everything I my home is made in America. From appliances to furniture, automobiles to tractors.
