What I find so interesting about this phenomenon is that it's identical to what you would have read and heard back in the mid-1800s about white people traveling unprotected across Kansas or the Dakota Territories. Travel there at your own risk.

Doubtful. I would bet a rather large sum this was an AR-15 or similar type rifle. He fired off a magazine and split.

As people who aren't journalists know, an AR-15 type is not a "high-powered rifle." It uses by definition a mid-power round.

I very much doubt he was using a 7mm Mag or equivalent, a truly high powered rifle.
