You don’t realize it much now, since the Royal Navy gave France such a licking, but France built some fine warships in the 18th and 19th centuries.

This also isn't new.

At the Turn of the Last Century Many of Russia's Battleships were French Built.

Everything that is old is new again.

Rate for Rate, French built sailing naval vessels were slightly faster than their British counterparts.
