THE Australian public has hailed the police as heroes following the siege in Martin Place.

The 17-hour stand-off at the Lindt cafe involved NSW police officers as well as members of the state Public Order Riot Squad, Dog Unit, Negotiators, Aviation Support Branch, Police Rescue and elite Tactical Operations Unit.

Now, Sydneysiders and the rest of the world are mounting a campaign to express their thanks to all those who risked their lives.

A Facebook page has declared this “Say Thanks to the Cops Day”, and members of the public have been stopping police in the street to express their gratitude.

One officer was clapped and cheered when he went into a McDonald’s in a western Sydney suburb for food, said a spokesperson for NSW police.

“Most people have been really, really supportive,” he said, “Members of the public have been approaching police on the street and there’s been a fair amount online.”

.....

The Facebook page read: “Despite the horror of the Sydney Siege that took place overnight one thing stood out that represents a shining light for our way of life. That is the professionalism and bravery shown by the Police Officers who worked non stop for the entire 17 hour siege.

“When watching footage of these guys storming into the Lindt Café it is important to remember that they are not just police officers. They are husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. They are just ordinary people like you and I putting their life on the line for us.

.....

The creator of the page, Joseph Del Duca, told news.com.au: “We are really encouraging people to thank the cops in anyway they feel comfortable. Be it a handshake, a nod or offering to shout them a coffee

It is good that the SWAT team went in to shoot the guy after he started killing hostages, that is better than staying outside.

Thank you, Sydney law enforcement!

I am so sorry to all the citizens of Sydney and mourn and pray for the victims. I wish you didn’t have to join the cities of the world that will never feel safe again.

According to you and the BBC TAG East actually did the take down, as opposed to the police.

Shouldn’t that be mentioned on this thread?

Do you have a link to your sources on TAG East doing the take down?

Australia is one big gun free zone.

Even if TAG East did the takedown, the police were still heavily involved in the operation, and if the people of Sydney are grateful to them, I don’t have a problem with that.

Besides the statement from a BBC correspondent (Frank Gardner), the only information I have on TAG East’s involvement comes from a source that isn’t easy to link to. I’m also discussing this in places where ex- and current ADF personnel hang out online.

An Australian gun owner.

You do your countrymen no favors by promulgating on this forum the lie that Australia has rational private firearm ownership laws, because it doesn’t.

I don’t think Australia’s laws are at all rational. I think they are bloody irrational.

But about a million Australians own millions of firearms so I think it’s a bit misleading to describe the country as a gun free zone.

You may not know who Frank Gardner is - he’s the BBC Security Correspondent. You can check him out at Wikipedia.

Mine don’t rust. They get used quite regularly. On targets anyway. I haven’t had cause to shoot at anything else for quite a while.

It was on BBC TV news.

Looking around to see what else I can find - it’s on his Twitter account.

Where on his twitter account, please cut and paste it or direct link to it.

Also link to your other sources reporting or statements, it shouldn’t be so hard to get you to just show us.

It’s there in black and white on the page I just gave you a link to.

“Assault team that ended the 16hr #SydneySiege are commandos from Tactical Assault Group”

As for my other sources, I can’t link personal conversations and unless you’re ex- or serving ADF, you almost certainly won’t have access to the other place I’m discussing this online and frankly I wouldn’t want to invite you to that forum.
