In some respects, 2014 was a crazy year. We saw some big stories including the raising and removal of the Costa Concordia, the horribly tragic Sewol disaster, the crash in oil prices, the fall of Horizon Lines
the list goes on. By other accounts, this year was actually a fairly tame, so much so in fact that we hear salvage companies are having trouble landing contracts. For most of us, this is a good thing. Maritime accidents and casualties are on the decline, at least they were last year and we are anxiously awaiting the final numbers from 2014. But thats not to say we didnt see some crazy videos this year. Heres the list of our top five six:

The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.
The Andria Doria collided with the Stockhome in dense fog just south of Nantucket.
It’s in my book, astonishing tales from the sea
BTW, you are flying the RBYC ensign upside down. That is supposed to be a tea trivet, not a crown.
Sea story time...
I was reading a formal accident report a few months back and it was regarding boats... like large boats on the Great Lakes. Over and over again the report kept using the word allision... and I thought it was a typo as I kept seeing the female name Allison.
I then looked up the word allision, and I learned a new term that day.
It’s Andrea Doria, not Andria Doria.
Just for the record ;)
Cool will check out later
That collision was in 1956. And the Stockholme is still sailing today(now named MV Azores).
Crazy maritime ping list? A bit esoteric?

Yep. Two ships CO-llide because each has a duty to take action to avoid crashing into the other.
Hitting a fixed object is an allision. Bridges and such can’t move so it’s not their fault if a ship hits them. Kind of of like the the joke about the commander of the Navy ship, the punch line of which goes, “This is a light house. Your call.”
