The NRA wasn’t much of a political organization at the time of the NFA (1934) and the GCA (1968). Plus, in the face of the 1920’s Prohibition lawlessness and 1930’s rural bank robbers, and two political assassinations that were highly played up, how much could they have done at the time?
If 922(o) refers to the ban on further registration of machine guns, that was attached via a voice vote of dubious legality. The rest of the FOPA that it was stuffed into did a lot of good.
It doesn’t matter what level of crime is going on, if the NRA were interested in protecting the 2nd Amendment then they should have been educating the public about their rights. Instead, Americans of the 20th century acted like cowering sheep. I seem to recall reading an article from 1986 where the NRA leadership expressed support for the MG ban. I still haven’t seen any recent NRA platform for getting rid of the NFA, GCA, 922(o) and 922(r). It seems to me that todays NRA is all talk and no game, they beg for funds and membership and then do nothing.
