Major tech companies sparked a discussion this year when they revealed information about the makeup of their workforce, confirming what many had suspected: That Silicon Valley firms, located in one of the most diverse places in the U.S., are mostly staffed by whites and men.

Must have a heck of a business card
not quite.
the firms are largely staffed by Chinese and Indian immigrants (legal and otherwise)
a good number of the companies are majority Asian, too
“white” USA citizens are hired but pretty much only if they’re under 30 years old. after that, they are often considered too old and outdated for SillyCon Valley employment
ps: many American “white males” with advanced degrees from the leading universities cannot even get interviews in SillyCon Valley, more or less get job offers there. This has included some at the very top tier of their class.
Reasons include the strong preference for Asian workers....
Whites and men have libs collectively clutching thier pearls. You know, I wonder what they’d do if ever faced with real problems?
It balances out the lack of whites in China and the Middle Easterns in India.
I used to work in an IT shop that had a fair number of blacks in it. Interestingly almost every single one of the actually productive ones was born and raised outside the US.
It’s not race that’s the problem, it is what AMERICAN BLACK CULTURE produces. The culture is the problem.
“When it gets down to it, the broader conversation about the gender, racial and gender makeup of the tech workforce is one about fairness.”
Silly me, I thought it was supposed to be about whether you can code software and design hardware.
I’ve been re-educated.
Yup. Several of my black twitter friends are immigrants.
and so will the quality of product —
But it won’t matter if the users of the product are also GPA 1 and 2.
Let’s see if we can make some predictions of what will happen if the shakedown artists and the fairness pimps get their way.
1. Hi tech companies whose workforce is mainly in the US will either move their operations to Asia or if they decide to remain in the US will fail.
2. Companies that already have operations overseas will increase them there.
3. Many Asians (Chinese, Indians) that are currently working in high tech companies here will go back home and start businesses there.
4. Fewer smart whites will go into the high tech field (just like they’ve abandoned medicine). They will go in some field that hasn’t yet been targeted by the fairness pimps, like finance or law, or perhaps migrate to the newly created overseas Silicon Valleys.
5. Housing prices in the Bay Area will start to decline
6. ?
Men have been completely chased out of the social science fields by by the 60% of college graduates who are female. They gotta go somewhere.
Sounds like they forgot to look at their guest workers.
No question culture is A problem. But the more fundamental problem is simple reality.
The following reality explains the composition of the hi tech work force.
It is a sad and tragic reality, but denying it doesn't alter it.
Quinn is an idiot that writes propaganda, nothing more.
A few years ago it was announced that the MAJORITY of new firms in SillyCon Valley are now started and owned by Chinese immigrants.
But the preference in hiring of Asians is by no means limited to Asian-run firms. You see this is many of the older “white American led” firms, too.
“Better work ethic” is the standard explanation, when you ask.
Many American students have given up studying engineering in the last few years. Some schools right in the Silly Con Valley region have trouble filling up their engineering classes, although of course the leading universities never have too much trouble...even though SillyCon Valley doesn’t hire nearly as many of their graduates than it could. Again, the immigrants “work better” (some say, also, they work “cheaper” but that’s not so clear when we’re taking about MS-graduates’ first jobs)
Put simply, its a very difficult study in college... and then when they get out, the graduates have difficulty even getting interviews, more or less hired. And the job stability is notoriously lacking in SillyCon Valley (the newspaper there reported a major study that the average engineer job lasts 11 months... some of the workers leave for better jobs, of course, but its well known that there’s an exceptionally high turnover rate due to firings (often with zero notice, just lock your desk, grab your coat, and get out the door!).
The kids are asking...who needs it? And they’ve answered by (largely) discontinuing engineering studies, either dropping out of college or shifting over to “easier” majors where they may, or may not, find better career opportunities...
Also, the kids tell you that they complete their MSEngineering when they’re maybe 23 or 24...and if they get jobs then they start experiencing serious Age discrimination against them by the time they’re 30. SO many firms want to replace them with new graduates, retaining only the most poven, best, essential ones and letting the other 80% go.
This latter business does bring a constant stream of “new talent’ into the firms, and you can point out that there are some competitive benefits of doing this. But it sure doesn’t make “going into engineering’ attractive for young American students. That’s for sure.
Yeah, its all about diversity, not product quality or innovation.
Keep repeating that until your company goes bankrupt. Just like Detroit.
You don’t know the half of it. I’ve been to Kenya in the past on business trips. Off of work, at the bars I have spoken to many of the locals and (big surprise) (/sarc) all consider the American blacks to be little more than self-important spoiled whiny brats.
What was really funny was back in the 70’s, I happened to travel with some American blacks visiting the country for the first time. ALL of them experienced severe ‘culture shock’ and swore up and down that those in the US had no idea how good they had it there and were idiots to spout on about how much better off they would be in ‘the mother country’ (Africa).
They also swore they were never coming back, but I never really followed up on that promise to see if they ever did.
