Wisconsin Republicans plan to push right-to-work bill in January

(Reuters) - Wisconsin Republicans say they plan to start the new year by introducing a right-to-work measure that would prohibit private sector labor unions from requiring workers to pay dues.

Republicans control both sides of the Wisconsin Legislature and the governor's mansion, leaving a clear path for right-to-work legislation that is already law in 24 states, including Michigan and Indiana, where laws were approved in 2012.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald on Thursday said in a statement that the legislature "simply cannot avoid engaging in an open debate" about right-to-work legislation and wanted to determine the most appropriate version for Wisconsin.

Fitzgerald said the legislature owed it to residents to have a public policy discussion on the issue.

Supporters of right-to-work legislation say it promotes the individual liberty of workers by giving them the choice of whether or not to join a union, and perhaps more importantly, whether to pay membership dues.

Opponents say the legislation weakens union solidarity and will lead to lower wages for all workers.

"It's a power grab," Phil Neuenfeldt, president of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, said on Friday in a telephone interview.

Yes. Why wouldn’t they? The worst that could happen (from their point of view) is that the law gets changed in ways they don’t approve.

Neuenfeldt said that a right-to-work law would allow employers to divide workers against each other

If we’re going to see political change enacted by the GOP it won’t happen in DC where Bonehead and McCoward will acquiese to the president. It’s going to occur at the state level. Good for you Wisconsin!

I wonder why Walker is downplaying this?

Hopefully he figures that it has enough momentum so that he doesn’t have to invest any of his own capital into getting it passed.

Republicans have 19 out of 33 seats this time. With a 60% quorum, ALL 14 Dems would have to flee, and it ddn't work last time, and won't be so interesting or creative looking this time.

It sort of reminds me of when my cat chased a squirrel up the drain pipe. He just sat at the bottom, waiting for the inevitable.

The lefties have been insisting that Walker doesn't really have a popular mandate; half a dozen elections later (3 for Walker, and 1 judicial and two legislative recalls that were referenda on Walker) the chatter starts to get a Baghdad Bob quality to it. At some point the national unions are going to decide not to spend the resources on the fight. This is why the chatter at DU turns to moving to Minnesota. IIt would be best, actually, if all of the lefties moved to a few states to gerrymander the country for us. Beats the heck out of aging hippies going to New Hampshire and Idaho.

Because he is a low-risk politician. He won’t say anything until he figures out which way the political winds are blowing.

Oh how I wish Scott Walker were my Governor.

At least we got rid of Pat Quinn (Illinois.)

If only. The Wagner Act requires that everyone in a union shop, whether he is in the union or not, gets compensated according to the terms in the union contract. Right to work is, unfortunately, not the right to bargain. The real damage done to unions by RTW is the undermining of the union seniority system.
