30 November 2014 Ecopop Referendum: Swiss Reject Immigration Curbs
Voters in Switzerland have decisively rejected a proposal to cut net immigration to no more than 0.2% of the population.
The country's 26 cantons rejected the proposal, with about 74% of people voting no in Sunday's referendum.
Supporters of the measure argued that it would have reduced pressure on the country's resources. Opponents said it would have been bad for the economy.
Around a quarter of Switzerland's eight million people are foreigners.
The measure would have required the government to reduce immigration from about 80,000 to 16,000 people a year

Stupid voters.
Let me guess the Immigrants can now out vote the Citizens
I would not be surprised if the Swiss change their minds on this issue.
The “Swiss” that entered the gate within a Big Horse won’t be changing their minds.
How many of their ‘immigrants’ have large fortunes and can afford to live well? I believe they get a substantial number of that sort.
The super wealthy often immigrate there. They likely don’t want to do anything to stop billionaires from moving there.
A BBC News story on immigration?
My first instinct...
What relevant information are they NOT telling me?
But is it not extremely difficult for an immigrant to obtain Swiss citizenship. I don’t think the Swiss have the equivalent to Barrack Obama (someone who hates his or her own country).
The Swiss voted the “correct” way on this and the gold standard referendum. The Germans have trained them well.
Exactly, the article is a bit misleading. For instance, somebody with around $20 million can immigrate to Switzerland and get a residency card. I’m willing to guess that getting a work permit is a completely different issue as well as public assistance.
My Sister’s husband is Danish. For a few years they lived near Copenhagen. My Sister had no problem with residency since they’ve been married so long. However, she couldn’t receive any public assistance and couldn’t get a work permit until she passed the Danish language fluency test which is not easy.
“Around a quarter of Switzerland’s eight million people are foreigners.”
That is high, though I suspect in the US it is even higher. It is difficult (if not impossible) to maintain a national identity with those figures. I guess the Swiss always had multiple nationalities anyway...
They want to go to Britain. And yet the bureaucrats in Brussels wonder why Brits are so angry.
As stupid as the Swedes..?
Maybe, I see.
From the article:
“The proposal also included a measure to limit overpopulation abroad by devoting 10% of Switzerland’s overseas aid to family planning in developing countries.”
The immigration limit was tied to a proposal to promote abortion outside of Switzerland.
I’m willing to bet the proposal would have had more support if it wasn’t for that additional measure.
