The St. Paul Public Schools superintendent apologized Tuesday for a Twitter comment on the Ferguson, Mo. shooting that sparked a flurry of reaction, most of it negative. Authorities announced Monday that a grand jury decided against indicting white police officer Darren Wilson for fatally shooting Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man. Soon after the announcement, Superintendent Valeria Silva tweeted, "No indictment for officer Wilson! Very sad day in America. How do I explain this to my black students?" Silva later deleted the tweet and clarified her intent. But her remark offended many, including some who agreed with the grand jury's determination and others who were angered by it.

Thanks for that. Not only did I respond to her on Twitter, but I just sent her an email.

Valeria Silva and other immigrants help Minnesota

By Joe Nathan | 12/01/09

It’s not, but this could easily be the story of an Irish, Italian or Jewish person who arrived in the United States a century ago, speaking no English, and having virtually no money. Instead, this is the story of Valeria Silva, and thousands of other Minnesota immigrants. A fascinating report, “The Economic Impact of Immigrants in Minnesota,” helps describe their impact in suburbs, greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities.

Twenty-four years ago, Valeria Silva came here from Chile. She spoke no English, and had almost no money in her pocket. Last week, the St. Paul School Board, on a 7-0 vote, named her its next superintendent of schools.

(snip)

... The Obama administration has asked Silva for help.

Easy. Just tell them to leave the property of others alone and not fight with cops and try to take their gun. If they do that, they may live to a ripe old age.

It is not her job to explain this to her students. it is her job to make sure they learn three R’s, science, and history.

Exactly! I’ve been reading down the thread to see if anyone posted a comment like that, as it was my first reaction to her comment about ‘explaining to her students’.

School teachers are paid to teach their assigned subjects; not to ‘explain’ everyday happenings in the world.

What makes you think Ms. Diversity knows how the law works in this country or even respects the rule of law?

“Pretty easy. You tell your black students that if they grow up to be thugs that rob a store owner, disregard what the police say & then run toward & attack the police, they, like any other person in any other country in the world, could get shot. There, solved her problem.”

WOW! You sure are smart! :-)

“Why people in positions like hers even get onto Twitter under their own name and tweet this type of thing I do not understand. If I wanted to tweet something like that, I’d make a Twitter name just for tweets I didn’t want to be attributed to me.”

There is a line from Babylon 5 (the greatest show in the history of TV)

“Always Bet On Stupidity.”
