The only thing the ref can be faulted for is not standing over the ball, as they usually do. There is no excuse for a player to deliberately initiate contact of any kind with an official.

After an offensive substitution, whether the offense has gotten into formation or not, the defense is given a short time to respond to that substitution. It’s usually such a short delay as to be unnoticeable.

It appeared to me the defensive players were still moving into place. I heard it discussed and saw the replay on one of the post game shows and it was stated that by the rules FSU should have been penalized and jamis “The THug” winston should have been ejected from the game but we know that some have a different set of rules. Probably celebrated after the game with a stolen lobster and rape.
