Researchers Say Modern Farming Methods Impact CO2 Levels In The Atmosphere
Beta Wired ^ | Nov 22, 20143 | Faheera Asif

According to the latest research, the modern farming methods have improved crop production but it also induced great impact on carbon dioxide cycles in the atmosphere. This concerned the scientists as the new drawback of the technology has come forward.

Two research teams found the “breathing” pattern of the terrestrial plants which showed emission and taking of carbon dioxide every year in a cyclic manner.

Last week, NASA released a video which showed carbon dioxide emissions in East Asia, Europe and United States and then reached the Northern Hemisphere; after that plants cleaned the atmosphere then returned the carbon dioxide back when winter arrived and they entered their sleeping phase.

Scientists believe that farming causes the 20 to 50 percent burst in the CO2 levels as it is absorbed in the growing months and then given off in the dormant phase.

The amount of land consumed for planting doesn’t influence this increase but the exponential increases in farm productivity do. Improved crop breeds, better fertilizers and more efficient irrigation have impacted the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

As now, it has become highly important to control carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, this new research has brought difficulties for the policymakers.

Josh Gray, Assistant Professor at Boston University, says “We realize that crops have expanded in efficiency over this time period and they were in the opportune spot to be impacting this.”

“We did the math and it turns out—amazing to me—they really represent a considerable measure of that increment. This is an immediate result of rigorous management of these ecosystems.”

Researchers don’t like the impact produced by humans on the carbon cycle.

Ning Zeng, atmospheric science professor at the University of Maryland, says “Changes in the way we deal with the land can truly change the breathing of the biosphere.”

The research was published in the journal Nature.

Okay, so the "solutions" will be (1) reduce the population, and (2) give up modern farming equipment (with subsequent further reductions in population). These statist devils won't quit until most of us are dead, so that they achieve their theoretical, acceptable level of atmospheric CO2, people be damned.

I’ve “always” been interested in this cycle, in which the drop in CO2 is significant over the northern summer. It led me to the idea of kudzu farming: vast tracks of phone pole size trellises where the kudzu is cyclically plowed under, or some such equivalent. This would emulate the Carboniferous peat bogs where our coal seams originated. This way, we don’t have to complete the cycle of fuel production to enjoy the fruits of carbon sequestration.

"Scientists believe that farming causes the 20 to 50 percent burst in the CO2 levels as it is absorbed in the growing months and then given off in the dormant phase."

Should that read that there is a 20 to 50 percent burst in the CO2 levels from external sources as plants stop absorbing CO2 as they enter the dormant phase? The way it is written implies that trees vaporise in the winter.

Obama and the EPA went after Big Coal and our electricity prices will go through the roof. Now, they’ll go after Big Corn.

Yeah, whatever.

The "CO2 levels" are practically nothing (.04%) ....50% of nothing is nothing.

Big whoop!

Well with CO2 now at about 400 parts per MILLION in the atmosphere, bringing a “50% burst” would increase the amount of CO2 in the air to 600 parts per MILLION so it will make the plants happier and more productive while they absorb it. These “scientists” are just looking for grant money ....

Scientists believe...

Uh, believing ain't science. Science is proveable repeatable results. Opinions are entirely worthless. Science is what can be demonstrated again and again.

The worst thing is seeing what NASA has become. Just another corrupt Federal Agency that has turned against its own citizens.

We get rid of the internal combustion engine and go back to using horses.

But then we'll have to grow food for the horses. That took about 27% of the farmland 100 years ago.

Oops.

Whoever these scientists are, it does not seem they consulted with anyone who could inform them about life sciences, specifically about the carbon cycle.

Biologists/biochemists/other life scientists have known about the carbon cycle for decades. It is nothing new. In the fall, when leaves pile up and decay, carbon dioxide is released into the air. In the spring, it is taken up by plants, which then become the carbon source for animals.

Guess what—the carbon cycle will continue, regardless of farming practices. Carbon is the basic material of all living things, what is with all this fearmongering over it?

The answer is obvious: We need less researchers.
