When I was in the 9th infantry at Ft. Lewis I had a friend that was a Black Panther leader I guess he was drafted (but i don’t remember), you should have seen the reaction when we entered black bars, first there would be attitude about the white guy, and then he would speak to the owner or bartender alone, and often in private, and they would start kow towing to him, like he was a Mafia Chief, they were afraid of him.
It was fascinating watching the power that he had.

What I described with the Black Panther was at Ft. Sill, we weren’t together in the 9th, the patch in your picture, along with the mention of the Black Panthers got me jumbled up.
