Tens of thousands of gun owners from around the country are taking advantage of Utah's concealed firearm permits each year often taking a required class given by instructors licensed by Utah but who live in other states.

About two-thirds of the nearly 577,000 permits Utah has issued in the last two decades have gone to residents from other states. More than 81,000 out-of-staters obtained permits from Utah in fiscal year 2014, accounting for 80 percent of the cards issued, shows a new state report issued this week.

Utah's permit is attractive to out-of-state residents because it's recognized in 35 states and allows them to travel more widely with it, said Rep. Curt Oda, a Republican lawmaker from Clearfield and a concealed-carry permit instructor.

Back when Wisconsin didn’t allow it, I got the Utah permit.

It opens a few more doors, but not as many as I would like.

You now must also have a permit from your home state if you are not a Utah resident.

They fingerprint.

Same here in Illinois. Florida and Utah together cover a lot of states. At one point I could carry in most states but my own.

Pretty dumb situation. I was in the same boat so to speak. I’ve been waiting 6 weeks for my IL permit to be approved. But I can carry in 30+ other states right now.

I have a Utah with my Indiana. Ohio won’t recognize Indiana because we don’t require training.

Since I travel though Illinois from Virginia to Iowa, I was happy to see that Virginians can now get Illinois permits - until I saw the red tape and cost. The most offensive thing, more than the fingerprints and the $300, was the necessity of getting an Illinois digital ID number.

Been thinking about getting a permit. But then they know.

I thought the same thing when I got mine 4 years ago.

Face it, "they" already know. There are so many little things you have done that have been scooped up as metadata.

Screw them. I'll not go unprotected in the city because of the potential that the commies in DC will know I own a gun. Consider the odds and priorities.

And when they come for CCDW folks, you'd better be ready to fight whether you are one of them or not because they will be coming after you eventually.

One other thing. The number of CCDW people and openly avowed gun owners is reaching the level that is going to intimidate the fascist gun grabbers. If there are enough of us, they will hesitate. We scare them and that is a good thing.

One of the top 5 reasons I got my permit was a political statement. Personally I’d rather they be afraid of me than me be afraid of them. I want them to know they don’t scare me. If enough permits rise to a number they have to notice, so much the better. I’m glad I live in a state that requires a class, it’s an indication I’ve had some training and proved I can put rounds where they are effective.

If leftists can do this with gay marriage, we can do it with guns.

That leaves no chance for a CA resident to obtain a Utah permit. Unless you’re connected, your chance of getting a permit in CA is slight less than Zero.

I lived in the North state(Butte County) area of California 15 Years ago and was able to get a CCW with little trouble. Maybe not now?

Eastern, rural CA understands, and respects citizens’ need and right to carry.

County dependent.

Check the law. I believe that you can carry in your car when passing through if you have a valid non IL. permit.

Well...I sure have to agree with all that... Most all of us buy our ammo in bulk on line so we can get it a bit cheaper....so I'm sure they know exactly how many guns we have and what caliber they come in....

There ain't a damn thing "secret" anymore.....

I just read a article on Drudge that said the U.S. is now down to number 20 in personal libertys....

Land of the free....maybe not so much anymore... And with Mexico taking so much advantage of our open borders...well....maybe home of the brave is also somewhat dated.... :(

California residents can get Nevada non-resident carry permits. The permit is only 3 years in duration as opposed to a Nevada resident resident which has a 5 year duration. You must take the prerequisite training in the county that issues the permit. The permit is not firearm specific like California. You can qualify with a .22 and carry a SP101 .357. There is NO RECIPROCITY with California.

For example if you have a 2nd residence such as a vacation home in the Tahoe region on the Nevada side the permit is issued through Washoe county.
