Support Builds in GOP for Government Shutdown Over Obama Immigration Orders

Momentum is building in the House in the GOP caucus to attach a rider to the Continuing Resolution that would fund the government until the end of the fiscal year that would defund agencies charged with implementing President Obama’s coming executive orders on immigration.

The amendment would almost certainly be unacceptable to Democrats in the Senate. This would set up a showdown with the White House, giving President Obama and the Democrats the option of failing to fund the government past December 12, leading to a shutdown.

The Hill:

“I am insisting on that [rider] because the president is violating his executive privilege,” GOP Rep. Paul Gosar, who represents the border state of Arizona, said in an interview Friday.

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) called the plan to block the executive action through the government-funding bill “a great idea.” Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.), who defeated then-Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the June GOP primary in part by accusing his opponent of supporting “amnesty,” said he also backed the proposal.

Asked if a government shutdown would be worth halting Obama’s immigration action, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) replied: “When you take an oath to uphold the Constitution, it is not appropriate to contemplate the political consequences. You should uphold the Constitution come what may.”

The call to arms by conservatives is a challenge for GOP leaders in both chambers, who also oppose executive action by Obama but acknowledge they have not settled on a plan to stop it.

This will upset the RINO wing here and in DC greatly. Upholding oaths? Principle? We were told that kind of behavior is bad.

Perish the thought.

Sounds good—especially if RATS get the blame.

They would always get the blame as they are always at fault. The problem is the GOP are usually to cowardly to take a mic and place the blame on them.

How is it possible these people in government are able to remain in their position, after clearly lying, mismanaging, and being up to their necks in corruption?

Why would any respectable honorable representative not be demanding Obama be removed from office?

Does this not reek of collusion and more corruption between the insiders in D.C.?

Asked if a government shutdown would be worth halting Obama’s immigration action ...

We cannot let the media frame the issue this way.

The strategy being followed seems fine to me -- write a spending bill which funds the government, and defunds amnesty. Pass it. Give it to Obama. Say:

"We Republicans desperately want to fund the government! We have provided funding! Please! Please! Sign this bill Mr. President s that the government stays open and provides all the services that American citizens are expecting!"

Then if there is a problem, and government shuts down, all we can do is shrug and say, "He'll sign it eventually."

The establishment GOP wants the cheap labor for their corporate sponsors. They have to be reminded that elections have consequences, and constitutional conservatives won.

You’re not thinking extreme enough: only fund the portions that are explicitly authorized by the Constitution — use *that* as your starting-point.

Somebody explain to me again how Republicans can get blamed for shutting down the government when they pass a piece of legislation that Harry Reid refuses to take up?

"Why does Obama want to shutdown the government to unconstitutionally grant amnesty to 5 million illegal aliens?"

...when all you need to do is Revoke the Executive Order.

I think you’re on to something. It needs to be painted as Obama wanting amnesty so badly that he’s willing to deny free stuff and government services to Americans if he can’t get it. That might even get the attention of the LIVs and EBT crowd....

I have been saying this for years, Just like Harry Reid sitting on over 300 bills and not allowing them to come up for a vote. What the he** is he/they down there for, for their benefits or to run our government?

I agree with you completely

The shut down should only happen after republicans make it clear that the executive branch is breaking the law and using executive order to get around the constitution. This should remain in the public eye until every low info voter has at least heard it and attempted to understand it. Period.

Then make like a defunding is the only way to stop the lawlessness.

Pubs, start squawking.

Yes, I know:

Boehner will probably not allow Articles of Impeachment to be brought to the floor.
There might not be enough reps with the stones to impeach.
The Senate will not vote to convict.

zer0 has laid his johnson right on the chopping block. Any good field commander would take advantage of that fact. I just can't get behind any of this defund-this-and-that stuff. Hell, zer0 has effectively defunded ICE by refusing to let them do their jobs. If I was in charge, I'd tell Gowdy, "Go get the bastard."
