Students, teachers and parents were taken by surprise after an “active shooter drill” brought the Winter Haven middle school into lockdown as armed police officers burst into classrooms with their weapons drawn.

Students at Jewett Middle Academy said they were terrified when police officers burst in the doors for a planned active shooter drill – but students and teachers are irked they were not told ahead of time.

“We actually thought that someone was going to come in there and kill us,” the station quoted her as saying. But police say they conduct these drills for the absolute safety of the students.

“These types of drills are vital in order to evaluate not only law enforcement response, but more importantly to educate the students and school officials in case an actual event were to occur,” Chief ...Bird said in an email to media.

.... many parents, however, received panicked texts from their children as the drill was going on.

Stacy Ray told WTVT that she received a text from her seventh-grade daughter Lauren Marionneaux after two armed officers burst into her classroom. ... police told The Post that one of the officers had his duty firearm – a handgun – drawn.

The gun was loaded, as is required. The other officer was carrying an unloaded AR-15. According to Ray, one of her children texted: “I thought he was going to shoot me.”

In a statement...spokesperson Jamie Brown for the .... police department said they were only aware of one student who texted a parent during the exercise.

“Unfortunately, no one gets an advanced notice of real life emergencies,” Polk County Public Schools spokesman Jason Gearey said in an e-mailed statement to The Washington Post. “We don’t want students to be scared, but we need them to be safe.”

Just more of the government desentizing the public to its brown shirt tactics.

I wonder how those kids will be influenced by this as adults.

Yeah sure....cops say it’s for “safety”....biggest load of BS coming from the jackboots. Exposing & pointing real weapons to children, for “training”. Real classy.....

I’ve gone 180 degrees from my views growing up concerning the police. They’ve gone from 100% pro-cop (good-guys) to a complete distrust and hatred for these lying, thuggish, mafia wannabees.

I know I’m not alone.

How many incidents were there when a LEO was demonstrating gun safety to a class when they shot themselves or the gun going off?

Everyone involved in this “exercise” - school administration and police department - should be fired.

Why do they keep doing this, putting on these unannounced raids and emergency drills? Eventually, they will get somebody in the crowd who feels endangered, then pull out their own legally licensed weapon. They are also placing their own officers in jeopardy.

Wonder what would happen to an ‘average Joe’ if they were brandishing weapons in front of little kids?

I haven’t gone quite that far yet, but I do recognize that things have changed. My first interaction with a cop was when I was in second grade and one gave me a ride to school because he realized I was going to be late.
I viewed cops as generally good through my college days in the 70’s. There were many times then they could have brought the hammer down on my friends and me, but they chose less drastic and less socially disruptive actions. Lessons given and learned.
Nowadays, however, everything is going towards “Maximum Bob”. At a recent 40th wedding anniversary party, we oldsters were reveling in tales of our youth when one of the adult children told us, in a serious tone, “ You would be in prison if you did that today.” She was right.

It is a good thing they didn't try this when I was teaching.

The first one to enter the classroom would have gotten a face full of HCL.

Actually my principal told me they had one of those drill at one of the schools he use to teach in. The same result, traumatized students, parents, and teachers.

Ohhhhh. It was just a little trauma. Shouldn’t have much impact on them, until they start signing up for SS Disability Due To Childhood School-Induced Trauma, at around age 21.

Marginally related, and I was a pilot and had very limited experience with ground operations, but I watched those cops move their drawn weapons (albeit fake blue plastic ones) across the back of other officers’ heads as they “cleared” the rooms.

Surely that is bad form.

Never point a gun at something you don’t want to kill. They need to take a basic NRA safety course......or maybe it would be better if they were just fired?

One commenter there made the observation that a kid can be expelled or suspended for pointing a finger in a gun-like imitation because it encourages “gun violence” or some such B/S.

However, these guys can burst into a classroom unannounced, with real firearms, and it’s OK, because (cough) it’s for your safety.

OMG. Imagine what might have happened if one of the kiddies had a bad hoarse cough that sounded like a dog barking.

"BANG BANG." One less dog in the world.

We used to call this:

Assault with a Deadly Weapon
Brandishing a Firearm
Using a Firearm during the commission of a violent Felony.

If my child was in this school, my Attorney would have been FILING CRIMINAL CHARGES against all these NAZI THUGS.

They belong in PRISON!!
