The White House is hinting that President Obama will veto any bill authorizing the construction of the Keystone Pipeline.
One of the few bi-partisan pieces of legislation is threatened by the most partisan president in history.
The Hill:
The White House on Thursday hinted that President Obama could veto congressional legislation approving the Keystone XL pipeline as lawmakers in both the House and Senate were readying votes on the controversial construction project.
"Our dim view of these kinds of proposals has not changed, press secretary Josh Earnest said.
Earnest reiterated that the State Department was still reviewing the controversial pipeline project, and that litigation in a Nebraska court still needed to be resolved.
On Wednesday, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), facing a tough reelection effort, requested unanimous consent to proceed on a vote approving the pipeline. With nearly a dozen Democrats supporting the measure, the Louisiana senator may have the votes to pass the bill into law.
I am glad that we will now have an up-or-down vote on the Hoeven-Landrieu bill to green light the Keystone pipeline, and I urge all senators to join me in the effort to approve this important project, Landrieu said in a statement.
Although a dozen Democrats may join Republicans in passing a bill, that isn't enough to override a presidential veto. Several of those Democratic votes would disappear in the new sesssion of Congress beginning in January, as most pro-Keystone Democratic Senators lost their seats in the mid term elections. By my calculations, Republicans would still need 13 Democrats to bolt in order to override a presidential veto in the new Congress. At this point, it doesn't appear possible.

Let's see: how many years has it been "reviewing" this project? Did it take that long to "review" the monstrosity called Obamacare? Or how about fighting WW2?
was he JOSH-ing or did he make that remark In Earnest....?
I think there would be enough votes to override the veto.
Hmmm. Why would the president veto such a bill when it has passed regulatory, environmental and all other hurdles, and the congress has voted to approve it?
What could his motive be?
I think its time for Congress to act unilaterally then on behalf of the will of the people.
Make him do it.
Call his bluff.
Show the world who is being obstinate and uncooperative.
Force his hand and make that kid who is his spokesperson spin like a dervish......................

“I think there would be enough votes to override the veto.”
Perhaps, but like the article said, many Dems are unaccountable as they lost their jobs.
Perhaps Obama will veto just so Mary can say she tried her best in getting legislation passed, and then tried to muster the votes valiantly to override, only to (in attacking mode) have her fellow Dems not see what she, as a great Senator sees to have this country prosper.
I see Mary using this to distance herself from Obama and “those evil” Democrats.
Oh, I agree entirely. I also believe that it won't work no matter what goes doen on Keystone pipeline. Mary was the 60th vote for Obamacare and she'll never shake that.
“Mary was the 60th vote for Obamacare and she’ll never shake that. “
Maybe. I lived in Louisiana when she was getting soundly beaten by Woody Jenkins on election day on her initial Senate election, only to have a judge step in to keep the Orleans Parish polls open a few extra hours so they could pack the ballot box to have her squeak by. Do you know how many parishes voted for her outside Orleans?
zero.
That veto will happen after the runoff election.
Funniest name for a government mouthpiece ever!
Absolutely. Ram it down his throat.
Absolutely. Ram it down his throat.
Should be amended to say, have the new Congress ram it down his throat.
LOLARMAOOTF!
I believe Warren Buffet owns the railroads which transports the oil from the upper Midwest and Canada.
Didn’t Buffet’s billion dollar tax liability “disappear” when he agreed to move the crude?
If this were an AP story , it would need “unexpected”.
20+ Democrats would have to vote to override the Veto, It may have happened just before the election but not now.
It's Reid and Dems who are suddenly pushing for passage of this thing in an effort to bail out Landrieu - they'd come up with the 20 votes - there will be more than 20 dem vote for the initial passage of Keystone if Reid brings it up.
