Washington D.C.’s non-voting Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced a bill Wednesday that would strip tax-exempt status from professional sports teams that associate with the Redskins team name, which she said “has officially been found offensive."
Norton’s bill is a companion measure to one offered by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wa.
Norton, a Democrat, cited a recent decision by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to deny the renewal of the Redskins name, which is currently under appeal by team owner Daniel Snyder.
“Continued use of the current team name and mascot is not only inconsistent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office decision, but what’s even worse is that U.S. taxpayers must bear the burden of subsidizing a multibillion-dollar industry and its use of a racial slur for profit,” Norton said.
Norton has also called on the Federal Communications Commission to “begin its own process to prevent on-air use of the team name.”

That is how I see it.
The team left the city in 1997. They actually play in suburban Maryland, not in Washington, DC proper.
How is the un-Constitutional Eleanor Holmes Norton permitted to do anything but shut up and watch, same as anyone in the Gallery? Where does she get authority to introduce bills?

Can someone explain to me, how, even if you care about this issue, how the issue of American Indian nicknames is in any way the business of Congress in Washington, DC???

More importantly, which article(s) and section(s) of the US Constitution empower(s) one or more branch(es) of the federal government to "officially" find things offensive?

Why is any team exempt from paying taxes? They most certainly make a profit.
I realize that some fans worship their teams but that doesn’t make it a religion. All pro sports team should pay taxes. It is a business after all.
What does that even mean?
