They are hereabouts trying to teach all sorts of convoluted ways to approximate answers with no emphasis on whether the answers are right or wrong. They older teachers are still having the kids memorize multiplication tables and addition facts (in younger grades) but the practice is discouraged, though not yet forbidden, because it is seen as making thinking processes rigid. They think they are teaching kids how to think.

Is that because the asian students learn more at school or because they get it at home after school?

Having seen how they focus in school, I'm willing to give the schools the credit. I've seen Asian kids sitting at their desk writing down everything the teacher says and there's chaos around them. They tune it out like Bruce Lee going in for the kill. They're amazing.

If America must take in great numbers of poor people from other countries it would be actually beneficial were it limited to Southeast Asians and Hindus. Cubans are another group that has proved an asset to the nation.
