President Obama leapt directly into the net neutrality fight Monday, urging the Federal Communications Commission to claim expansive new powers over the Internet to enact the "strongest possible" rules.
Under his plan, the FCC would classify broadband Internet as a "telecommunication service," a provision the agency already uses to regulate telephone companies. Broadband providers like Comcast and Verizon have been lobbying fiercely against the same classification for Internet service, warning it would strangle their industry with utility-style regulations.
Obama noted that the FCC is an independent agency and that the ultimate decision will be up to Chairman Tom Wheeler and the four other commissioners. But his statement puts tremendous pressure on the Democratic appointees to seize the controversial new powers.
Under his plan, the FCC ban Internet providers from blocking websites, throttling Internet service, or striking any deals for special Internet "fast lanes" for websites that pay more. The rules would apply equally to a home Internet connection and mobile devices.
Trick question.....
What is “fingers crossed” while taking the oath of office?

No, no, no. The BW taken by FR is 100 times less than the BW for the crap the entertainment industry puts out. There is no question the providers want to save money by not building the pipes for the crap. FR is not going to be affected in any way.
Great, so your answer is to have the government regulate them? Why not just skip the corporate facade and have the feds run the internet?
We need to emphasize that with Obama’s record of ABUSE OF REGULATORY POWERS, this matter deserves to be buried without further consideration.
I’m cynical about the whole thing, I don’t see an internet version of the Fairness Doctrine controlling speech online.
This looks like some economic debate here over who pays the bill with the government taking sides over who will pay$$$$.
If it ends up with you and me paying like Obamacare that isn’t good.
Of course the counter argument is that somebody has to pay.
Like Mitt Romney said regarding healthcare there were ‘freeloaders’ in the system.
If any candidate wants to get elected they should run on this and make it clear what the government wants to do to their internet. Make it more expensive, tax everything bought on line and basically control all content.
The reason they want to do this is that the leftists in charge can't control the opinions getting out there. They can't control it like they can newspapers and television so it's a threat.
“net neutrality” “transparency” “comprehensive” “affordable” “religion of peace” ...
Obama’s people could make a murder of crows blush bright crimson.
Look for this to land up in the courts bigtime.
Stuff like this will and make no doubt about it, WILL make REVOLT likely.
It never occurs to these tyrants to ask Congress to pass a law.
The new Congress needs to put his a$$ in check.... pronto!
I believe only the Congress has the power to do what SlimeBama intends.
But, they’re a lazy and timid lot.
Torpid?
LOL
Had to ask Webster the definition.
Another word of the day and one to grow on.
Oh, come on — I can hope both lose!
The tyrant in the white house will not stop until he takes away all of our freedoms. Let him and his accomplices enact these regulations and before long he will get to the rest of us.
forget about free Obama phones, i want my free 50mbit fiber optic
A big Chicago sewer rat is feeling cornered...
The federal courts that have struck down previous net neutrality rules have done so specifically because the FCC has not previously classified broadband internet as a "telecommunications service":
Deciding a lawsuit brought by Verizon, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit struck down the rules. The court said the FCC saddled broadband providers with the same sorts of obligations as traditional "common carrier" telecommunications services, such as landline phone systems, even though the commission had explicitly decided not to classify broadband as a telecom service.
"Given that the Commission has chosen to classify broadband providers in a manner that exempts them from treatment as common carriers, the Communications Act expressly prohibits the commission from nonetheless regulating them as such,"
So, if the FCC classifies broadband as a telecom service, there will be no basis for the federal courts to strike new net neutrality rules.
