Buckle up for an Oregon driving-tax blowout: Editorial

For Oregonians who care about the cost of driving, the most significant development Tuesday might prove to be the upset of incumbent Republican state Sen. Betsy Close by Democrat Sara Gelser in District 8, which covers parts of Albany and Corvallis. Even before the Senate seat switcheroo, lawmakers were likely to consider a road-funding package during the 2015 session. Now, Oregonians may have to swallow two pieces of legislation that will raise the cost of commuting, shopping and everything else people do with their cars.

If it weren’t for the liberal freaks moving to Oregon the state would be quite conservative. Since their pinot noir wine boom back in the 80s Oregon has turned in to a basket case of progressives. They have three cities that control that entire state and the rest is left to fester in the stink of pachouli and pay the bills. Try finding a liberal near the snake river (border between Idaho and Oregon). Filthy hippies are hard to find until you get over the Cascade mountains. That is if you avoid the few that are turning Bend (former logging city) in to a haven for rich hippies that made fortunes in the stock market.

**How much will this cost Oregonians? The state doesn't know, but assumes a per-gallon range of 4 cents to 19 cents by the end of the 10-year phase-in. Oregon's gas tax is 30 cents per gallon. The program is supposed to shield Oregonians from dramatic spikes in fuel prices, but the trigger for scrutiny is 5 percent of the retail price of fuel – about 18 cents for $3.50 gas. And even then, the state isn't obligated to take immediate and cost-saving action. You can bet it won't.**

If you would like more information about what's happening in Oregon, please FReepmail me.

I lost my Oregon list when my computer crashed recently, so please send me your name by FReepmail if you want to be on this list.

I have no problem with this. It's the beauty of federalism.

My only beef is when liberals ruin their states, move, and vote for the same crap over again.

And then demand a bailout because they have ruined their cities/states.

I worked at Oregon State University (classified staff, not faculty) when the Engineering Depts got a contract to figure a way to track where vehicles went. In particular they wanted to be able to tax vehicles that traveled the most difficult roads to maintain, like the mountain passes. Federal money came in for that project, as well as our ODOT. Anything that starts here is going to radiate out to the other states. Until we force gov’t back to its LIMITED powers, we’re all going to end up facing this kind of nonsense.

Which reminds me I need to pay my toll for the CO E470.

Supposedly they take your picture and you find your license number online and you pay it.

I don't know what happens if you don't pay (if you are from out of state).
