What absolutely terrifies the likes of CNN and MSNBC is that there is no other format where these obscene carriage fees can be duplicated. Only cable and satellite are NETWORK driven. Every emerging technology, such as streaming, is CONTENT driven. People aren't paying for networks, they are paying for individual shows and movies.
Network allegiance is dying, and so is appointment television; and with it goes the lucrative strategy behind monetizing both.
It's certainly possible for a CNN or MSNBC or any low-rated cable network to try a subscription-based format, but there is no way that will ever come close to replicating the evil genius behind forcing 100 million homes to pay for dozens of channels they never watch.
In this new world, some networks might survive, but not the CNNs and MSNBCs:
Turner Broadcasting CEO John Martin recently predicted a Darwinian thinning of the channel herd in the coming years as financial pressures weigh on programmers and distributors alike.
There are too many networks in existence today in the United States. You would not want to be the owner of a small niche network where youre getting an affiliate fee, and consumers dont give a crap about it which is why we never did that, Martin said during Time Warners Oct. 15 Investor Day event. One of our competitors has 14 networks that are below the top 60. Goodbye."
Bundled cable is nothing more than left-wing affirmation action that allows junk like CNN and MTV to survive and enter our homes even though we hate it. Streaming is changing all that, and for the better -- both culturally and for our pocketbook.

It’s a shame that CNN is still foisted on the public at almost all airports. Who decided that?
Good news on several fronts.
“Who decided that?”
Good question!!! “Follow the money” might help answering it....
Our high-speed internet company used to call about once a month trying to get me to sign up for cable TV. Always with these ridiculous low-ball initial prices that jump way up later. As if I didn’t understand that.
I always told them that I wasn’t paying to have hundreds of channels of crap pumped into my living room.
I think it started when Fox was a puppy. Don’t know why it’s still that way. Maybe it’s free to the airport?
Let the games begin! Eventually, everything is supposed to move to the internet. Cable is circling the drain and with it lefty news media.
Unlike obamneycare, if people have a choice whether to pay for crap or not, 9 times out of 10 they will take a pass. LIVs exist because somebody has to be the 10th persons willing to buy the Brooklyn Bridge.
Probably the administration of the airports has a deal with CNN. Is it just the local McDonald’s or does McDonalds have a deal with Fox News?
GOOD QUESTION! I have often wondered the same thing. I would start to see if there is any money involved in awarding the “franchise” secondly how many DemocRats; thirdly....
60 minutes must have had an “EXPOSE” donchathink?
I have a Roku 3 hooked up to my wi-fi network and I get Netflix and Amazon Prime for about $20/mo total. That’s all I need with regard to content. If I absolutely have to see a movie that’s not on Netflix or Amazon Prime, I guess I can rent it at one of those Redbox vending machines for a couple dollars. But that hardly ever happens.
If I could pick exactly which networks, then honestly, I would buy it. Second, Amazon and Netflix allow me to watch all episodes of say LOST or other shows up to 1 year ago without missing episodes as a concern.
But if MSNBC had to compete based on the ratings, would MSNBC be able to stay in business? Would Rachel Maddow still get her big paycheck? Would the likes of “Toure” on MSNBC still get paychecks? Would they have to do something else for a living rather than do stream of conscious liberal crap for a living????
Maybe junk is what they've become. Both have strayed far from what made them the reason people purchased cable in the beginning.
AT&T just cut our bill in half rather than canceling.
I think $100/mo is not bad for blazing fast fiber-optic broadband internet and cable.
Tha's racis'.
CNN was pretty crafty in the early days. Their programming went to Europe too. In fact, it was terrible to think that programming represented the American thought for a generation or more.
You can also pick up a specific show on iTunes for $2.99 or so.
The Sarah Palin Channel is the only thing worth watching since Murdoch has driven Fox News into a leftist direction. Frankly, Almighty God’s Holy Bible, Free Republic and Sarah Palin’s Channel pretty much sum up what’s good and redeeming. Otherwise, the media is the enemy and the FCC ought to be abolished along with other commie agents of the central government.
Now I can see how CNN and the other communist stations can remain in business,
it's a forced enterprise with a contract to the public. Perfectly socialism.
