She was also able to overcome Woody Jenkins’s challenged to her candidacy because Trent Lott was currying favor with John Breaux, the other LA senator at the time.

But I still think W should have had her and Ray Nagin shot on Day Two of the Disaster. The NOLA PD commissioner, Ray Crackhead Nagin, and their corrupt City Hall Gang cost many lives and have never been properly punished.
He didn’t become state senator until 2006, a year after Katrina.
Justice has been meted out a little, though. Nagin’s in jail, as is BooBoo Broussard.
