With Scars Fresh and Windows Still Boarded, Ferguson Steels for More Unrest
New York Times ^ | November 7, 2014 | By JULIE BOSMAN and MONICA DAVEY

FERGUSON, Mo. — Walk down West Florissant Avenue, and the scars of the summer are still there. The door and display window of a beauty supply store remain covered with plywood; a glued-up poster, “Beauty Town Is Back,” is the one hopeful sign of the life inside. A cellphone store, too, still has the plywood up from when riots and confrontations with the police shook this neighborhood. And the Family of Faith Baptist Church uses its billboard to proclaim, “Join us as we pray for peace.”

“I hate this,” said Dan McMullen, the president of Solo Insurance Services, as he sat behind his desk on Thursday. During the course of a 20-minute conversation, his phone did not ring; no customers walked through the door. “Business is terrible,” he lamented. “The customers don’t want to come here anymore. We all know the grand jury is going to come back in the next couple of weeks, and everyone knows there won’t be an indictment. This time around will be a lot more violent.”

Capt. Ronald S. Johnson, the Missouri State Highway Patrol official who became the public face of law enforcement here after early clashes, said he had spoken to school groups and church panels about long-term changes needed in Ferguson. Still, the grand jury’s looming decision comes up regularly.

“I tell them that we’re going to make it through whatever happens,” Captain Johnson said in an interview. “I also tell them that it is my belief that whatever happens is not going to be as bad as we believe it’s going to be. I also tell them that I believe we’ll be better for it. But I tell them that I look at each day for each day.”

They don’t even bother covering up that she’s the real president anymore, do they?

Order a thousand body bags and leak it to the press.

Order 10,000 rounds of assault rifle ammunition.  Leak it to the press.

Just let it be known, that if rioting starts again, lethal force will be used.

The governor should let it be known, he won't stand for more of the same.

I'd call up several thousand national guard prior to the verdict annoucement.  I'd stage them and make sure they could be in Ferguson within hours if needed.

I'd also pass some ordinances or legislation that made it crystal clear any outside agitators would have the book thrown at them if they were caught committing crimes.  Special laws should govern situations like this.  A civil unrest / riot situation crime would get you a manditory ten year sentence.

My aunt had to sell in a similar situation. She sold a house for 30,000 that was probably worth 100,000 at that time in a different location. I feel sorry for all the folks who have done their best to create a future there.

“...said he had spoken to school groups and church panels about long-term changes needed in Ferguson.”

I’d be willing to bet they didn’t discuss a single ‘change’ that really needs to happen in Ferguson.

An aquaintance was looking to buy a house in PA about twenty five years ago, and he basically took a map of the general area he liked and used a compass to draw circles around the black populations in the general vicinity. He made sure he was over a dozen miles away from any of them, and twenty five years later his home has appreciated nicely. There has been a lot of development of former farms in the area, and the new homes are incredible - adding nicely to his own value.

Many years ago (1966) there was a large tornado in Topeka, KS.

The mayor went on tv and said looters would be shot on sight.

There was no looting.

I just heard another of that rogues gallery mentioned on the radio; supposedly Al Sharpton was one of the first people Obama spoke to after the mid-term ass-whipping the Dems just took. Geraldo referred to him as the “premier civil rights leader”; from now on he will be referred to as Al “Tawana Brawley” Sharpton.

We all know the grand jury is going to come back in the next couple of weeks, and everyone knows there won’t be an indictment.

This probably tics off Ovulture more than losing the midterm election.

Meanwhile, the Ferguson police have set aside funds to repair vehicles and other equipment that WILL BE wrecked in the violence that will ensue. Maybe we should take THAT up with the UN.

The governor is a Democrat. He is more likely to let Ferguson burn. St Louis county will likely also burn.

I thought that the USA had legislation similar to Canada’s (and several other British Commonwealth countries) “Riot Act”. Once the Riot Act is read, a mob has 30 minutes to disperse, on penalty of a long prison term.

Are the “oppressed minority” going to sit around and wait for fake liberals with a need to overcompensate for their racism (the NIMBY crowd) by doing community outreach and cleaning up the mess the rioters and looters made? Or how about they forgo the protests, riots, destruction, and mayham, and repair the ruin they created for themselves?

“Business is terrible,” he lamented. “The customers don’t want to come here anymore.”

That’s what happens when you loot and burn the business that serve you.
