I don’t like his politics, but Matthews has a pretty keen political sense from the years he spent working as a member of Tip O’Neill’s staff. Every now and then he drops the partisan veneer and offers some very objective political insight.

Actually I think he is saying the opposite. Chris is saying that “Obama is so ideological that he doesn’t care if he takes his own party down with him”. Chris is affirming what many here have said, which is that Obama has his view of the world and that is all that matters to him.
