Steve King, Other Republican Candidates Win Big (King gets 62% in R+4 district)

Not only did Iowa voters decide to send another Republican from Iowa to the U.S. Senate to join Chuck Grassley there, voters elected Republicans in three out of the four congressional races in Iowa. Congressman Steve King, a Republican from Kiron easily won his bid for a seventh term.

(SNIP) In the northwest Iowa counties, the Ernst to Braley ratios were 76/20 in O’Brien County, 87/11 in Sioux County, 78/18 in Osceola County, and 84/14 in Lyon County.

Before they even think about primarying Young the conservatives there need to settle their feuds and settle on ONE candidate. Young was given the nomination at the convention because he was the only option many didn't hate, even though he'd finished way behind more conservative options in the primary. Conservatives there tried dang hard to lose this seat.

The Iowa GOP also needs to start working NOW on finding state senate candidates for 2016. We punted on 6 races with Rat incumbents this go around and had to settle for a net push and a continued 24-26 Rat run Senate. I hope the blame for that belongs to the Paultards who controlled the state party apparatus until last summer.. GOP hasn't controlled the senate since '02, although they were briefly tied IIRC, but rules in Iowa didn't give the Lt. Gov we held a tie breaking vote. A huge backlog of good legislation will continue to die in our Senate because a party that can win 98/99 counties for Branstad and produce the longest serving governor in US history and maintain good control of the House can't get over the top. Oh, and promoting Joni means we'll need a special election to replace her in the state Senate.

The standard take on Young is that the new Iowa district containing Polk County (Des Moines) isn’t really conservative. Which is bunk, as the new district is more conservative than the old one containing Polk County.

Young, BTW, won every county in the district except Polk, and the same would likely be true of almost any GOP candidate.

Staci Appel, married to one of the Iowa Supreme Court Justices that imposed gay marriage, was a well-financed Dem insider.
