New England Electricity Prices Spike As Gas Pipelines Lag
NPR ^ | 05 Nov 2014 | Sam Evans-Brown

When Don Sage of Concord, N.H., learned his electric bill could rise by as much as $40 a month he got flustered. He and his wife make do on a bit less than $30,000 a year in Social Security payments, and they pay close attention to their electric bills.

"When the invoice comes in the mail to get paid, I have a target amount that we can fluctuate up or down, based on our fixed budget," Sage says. "They don't need my permission to hike up their rates, but the fact is we're the ones that are paying these increases."

Utilities in New England have announced electricity rates hikes on the order of 30 percent to 50 percent, making prices some of the highest in the history of the continental United States.

For Sage and other consumers, these changes seem to have come out of nowhere, but in reality, they have been a long time coming. Between the years of 2000 and 2013, New England went from getting 15 percent of its energy from natural gas to 46 percent. That's dozens of power plants getting built.

But the pipelines to supply those power plants? Not so much.

At the same time, with the fracking boom just a few hundred miles west driving down gas prices, more and more homeowners were switching to natural gas for heating.

So now when it gets cold and everyone turns on their heat, the pipelines connecting New England to the Marcellus Shale are maxed out.

Power plant operators are left to bid on the little bit of gas that's left over for them, and the prices can get out of hand.

Don't need pipelines for coal.

Have a nice winter.

Gee. I wonder why the building of energy infrastructure in New England is “lagging.” Its one thing to vote for feel-good Green regulations that halt energy development. Its another thing to freeze your ass off in the winter — that doesn’t feel so good anymore.

Sorry, no sympathy. There is ample evidence showing that New England voters did this to themselves.

They may now proudly and truly call themselves Green, kinda like the green color of frozen spinach!

Bwahahahaha...

Hey, be nice, I’m stuck here with these idiots in NH!

They just re-elected Shaheen (senate), Hassan (governor), and Kuster (congress).

All that Quebec hydro-power (real, renewable energy) waiting to be tapped and we can’t even get a power line apporved....

When Don Sage of Concord, N.H., learned his electric bill could rise by as much as $40 a month he got flustered.

Here is an e-mail I sent to my friends in Mass. the other day.

I am using National Grid and paying $ .0922 / kilowatt hour.
The column below on the far right is how the rates are going to vary in the next 6 months.
My usage part of the last bill was 1299 kwh x .0922= $119,77
The same usage in January would be 1299 X .20983=$272.57
That’s a big increase for the same service.

Be careful , there are options to use other suppliers but you might get locked in.
The rates may come down on Nat Grid as they indicate for April 2015 and you could get stuck with a higher rate for years with another supplier.
Try navigating their site at nationalgridus.com for further confusion. - Tom

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Below are the new National Grid Rates November 2014 9.946¢ December 2014 15.981¢ January 2015 20.983¢ February 2015 20.405¢ March 2015 12.930¢ April 2015 9.341¢
Don't they have any railroads?
In the past I have seen long trains made up of only rail cards full of coal all across the US. These train were about one mile long with four additional diesel engines in the middle of the train because they were so long.
Surely it would not be a problem to run the coal cars to the Northeast and stockpile enough coal for the entire winter
OK folks after the RETURN BACK to the USA election last night , the Democrats are shreaking like the wicked witch of the west after having water being spilled on her.
So now ? Remember the infamous picture of the Demo rats laughing in the cameras in Congress ? With Barney Frank ? Nancy Pelosi ? Laughing drunk on power and contemp towards Republicans and us voters ?
How they forced everything on us we were opposed to ?
Even their form of energy ? To destroy the US economy with being forced to go green therefore losing jobs?
Remember Obola Hussain was asked about how Americans deal with the higher price of gas and heating cost ? And correct me if I am wrong, but he said to the effect to the American people about higher energy cost “ suck it up, deal with it , to bad “ ?
There is a German word or term that comes to mind:
schadenfreude
Schadenfreude for those New England liberals who forced all this on us including the “ Greene energy “ religion to pay higher costs in their heating bills, electric bills.
Suck it up liberals, deal with the higher costs of your energy bills.
"Winter is coming?"
Since this is about price increases, how about: A Lannister always pays his debts!
Indeed, it's easy to supply the coal.
Problem is, a lot of the coal-burning electric plants have been shut down, so there's nowhere to burn more coal. (The homes are mainly heated by gas and oil.)
The Northeast has converted from coal-fired elecric plants to gas-fired, and a lot of the homes have converted from oil heat to gas. So there's a demand surge for gas, without the supply (since not enough gas pipelines). Thus, gas prices (and hence electric prices) have surged.
The war on coal takes its toll. And it was justified by a flawed climate theory. What fools these liberals be.
Remember a while back I was complaining about Obama closing coal plants that totaled to about 40% of what electric plants burn. There is not enough pipeline capacity to make up the difference. Dimwits run this government.
'In New England, this winter, based on what's been recently trading, is likely to have the highest natural gas prices on planet Earth'
'A plan from the six New England governors to subsidize bigger pipes was tabled recently when Massachusetts announced it wanted to study the question further before committing.'
Joy.
