Well, remember this is what got Pat Quinn elected four years ago:

Tonight is obviously quite a different story but look at what has changed: Cook County (the city of Chicago and close-in burbs) abandoned Quinn and the Democrat Party. That's huge. The rest of the state is pretty much conservative, with pockets of gimmedats in the larger cities, but the rural downstate area is already red. If we could seceded from Chicago, IL would be as conservative as Indiana, or other midwestern states where a single large urban center can't out-vote the rest of the state.
