Road Trip: Clear Air Force Station, Alaska

Clear Air Force Station is an Alaska Air National Guard radar station for detecting incoming ICBMs and submarine-launched ballistic missiles to NORAD's Missile Correlation Center (MCC) and to provide Space Surveillance data to Air Force Space Command's Space Control Center (SCC).

Clear's AN/FPS-123 Upgraded Early Warning Radar is part of the Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) which also includes those at Beale AFB, Cape Cod AFS, RAF Fylingdales and Thule Site J.

The "historic property" was one of the Alaska World War II Army Airfields and later a Cold War BMEWS site providing NORAD data to Colorado's BMEWS Central Computer and Display Facility (CC&DF).

The 13th Space Warning Squadron, Clear Air Force Station, Alaska, provides space situation awareness and tactical warning of ballistic missile attacks against the United States and Canada as part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. The squadron is a geographically separated unit of the 21st Space Wing, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

The 13th SWS detects sea-launched or intercontinental ballistic missiles, and determines the potential number and probable destination of missile attacks. It supports the space surveillance network by providing space surveillance data, tracking, reporting, and space object identification, and maintains and operates a Pave Phased Array Warning System radar.

Our daughter volunteers at the post office there every Christmas. They are deluged with letters that need postmarks and they use tons of volunteers to get through them all.

We’ve been a few times, but haven’t been to that restaurant, I don’t think. Was the reindeer beef good? We are actually going again, on 12/4 because our daughter is having their 3rd child. She homeschools the 11 year old and they also have a 3 year old, so she has her hands full and will appreciate a little help.
