Trading Places: It's Time to Trim the Debate Moderators' Role
American Thinker ^ | November 2, 2014 | Clarice Feldman

As this campaign season draws to an end, doubtless many will comment on what was right and what went wrong for each party. Let me beat the crowd by stating whatever the outcomes of the Congressional and state races the notion of Republicans continuing to allow Democratic operatives posing as newsmen and women to act as moderators in candidate debates is one of the most inexplicably stupid blunders of all. And yet each election it is repeated. Let this be the last time.

Here are some names and incidents that should be engraved forever on the RNC steps and in each republican officeholder’s quarters: George Stephanopoulos, Gwen Ifill, Charlie Gibson, Candy Crowley, and James Pindell.

George Stephanopoulos

George, a key figure in the Clinton Administration, went on (with no journalistic experience) to become a newsie at ABC. In 2012 during one of the (too many) Republican candidate debates he surprisingly hit the candidates with a question about contraceptives -- certainly an odd issue for a presidential debate. Within weeks the Democrats launched their “War on Women”. Do you suppose this was a coincidence? Or, like me, do you think this was the first shot in a planned campaign, designed to appeal to single women which focus groups had accurately pegged as vulnerable to a campaign organized around emotional, appeals not rational, considerations?

Gwen Ifill

In 2008, this PBS correspondent, moderated the debate between vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin without having disclosed that a book she’d authored, The Breakthrough scheduled to come out after the election, was highly complimentary to Obama and would be more saleable if he won. American Thinker’s Lee Cary detailed how biased and often uninformed her questioning was:

Here’s one of my favorite examples Cary gave:

This is part of the reason I have little faith in the real conservatism of Republican leaders

Why they agree to debates on CNN, PBS, NPR, etc... - with moderators coming from these places is absolutely beyond me. Its a sign they can’t escape the media-government-elitist mindset.

Agreed, they know going in they’ll be debating their opponent and the moderator, it makes no sense that they agree to the debate.

Yep, too little too late for this election but in Feldman’s defense it was the Pindell fiasco that opened the door for this weeks article.

It’s unfortunately a truism, that old saying that :

The Democrats run against the Republicans.

The Republicans run against the Democrats and the media.

Why do debate panels always have to be composed of journalists, anyway? Why not a panel composed of a business leader, a retired military officer, a physician, a law enforcement officer, and then maybe throw in a journalist just for old time’s sake? The concerns of journalists hardly outrank those of other Americans.

Because, somewhere along the way, networks and political parties decided that journalists have some unique insight into politics and the issues of the day???

That because journalists cover the news and politics for a living, that somehow we’re supposed to revere their opinions????

Just my 2 cents as to why journalists, and liberal ones at that, are moderators.

How about a Rush Limbaugh or Mark Levin type as a moderator? That might cause some interesting debate moments.

That is a very good suggestion for rectifying the blatant hypocrisy, there are many people in communities with integrity and those are who should moderating.

As long as the senior “leaders” of the DC republicans call the shots, this will never change. Like McCain, they’ve deluded themselves that the media loves them, or that they can charm the media into supporting them by showing how well they can take a punch and keep smiling.

I’d support any GOP candidate who would grab almost any of the creeps who anchor “news” shows and bitch slap them just once. Literally.

How about each side gets to choose a moderator, and they can take turns asking questions. Conservatives would have nothing to lose. It might even level the playing field.

With the VAST majority of journalists self-identifying as liberal, it’s time to either disqualify them outright or weight the panel equally with conservatives. This has gone on long enough. The problem is the networks hosting the debates know damn well that someone like Rush would obliterate their preferred candidate.

Don’t blame Candy...she’s just an Obamabot low life....Mitt Romney stood by and approved her as his moderator....the fault lies with the candidates having the debate!!! Ya know this is a “Republican” problem....it’s called being weak sisters!!! What that little runt up in New Hampshire, did to Scott Brown was totally uncalled for. He should have been fired on the spot by his employer!!! If it had been me....I would have given him a New york beating he never would forget!!! These low life liberal, Obamabot, scum moderators...need to be taken to task IMHO!!!

Yes but who would ask the pointy-head questions that there's no real answer to, but leads the audience to believe the candidate isn't worthy.  (Republicans only of courseA)
