Salk was not called the Father of Biophilosophy without reason. I have explained the possible reasons why he did not patent the vaccine here: Why didnt Jonas Salk patent the polio vaccine?
For those who want a short answer, Salk would have been richer by $7 billion if his vaccine were patented. Continue reading for how the number was arrived at.

Seven Billion!
Just think of the epic list you could make!
Uh, ALL OF IT! Duh! What a stupid question!
I also was in the Polio Vaccine trial. I was fortunate, I got the real stuff. I then went through all the other trials including the Sabin Vaccine. While in the military I had several rounds of the vaccine.

Years ago, Salk was working on an AIDS vaccine.
IIRC, the vaccine was to be similiar to the polio vaccine - using killed virus to elicit an immune response.
Salk was actually using the vaccine on himself in order to test whether an immune response was gained. But he died before he could do the trial.
To me, that’s the ultimate sign of dedication when you’re willing to risk your life in order to save millions of others.
Why didn’t Salk patent the vaccine? Because he would have been required to assign the patent to the US government since his work was based on a federally funded grant.
Surprising, because we Jews are money-grubbing thieves, or so I understand from reading the MSM.
In seriousness, I’ve never understood that stereotype, and it’s the only Jewish stereotype that actually grates on my nerves.
Giving 10% to charity (usually 5 to Shul/Jewish causes and 5 to whatever) is the minimum and most do more, plus “sweat equity” charity like volunteer work.
The tendency to be neurotic/nebbish, the over-bearing mom, etc. all have a grain of truth and are probably fair and funny.
But tight with those in need is unmitigated BS.
maybe he didn’t want to make riches off polio vaccines these people knew had the simian sv-40 virus - among other viruses not removed - known to be in there, that would go on to give cancer to millions of people, that would surface in them later in life.
I’m guessing he thought it enough that God could aid him in is goal, to rid the world of a disease he was very interested in and the knowledge his discovery would save countless lives was payment enough.
Wrong by one post.
SV-40. Bingo.
I read about that 20 years ago and suddenly the “unexplained” growth of cancer in the areas of the world using monkey based vaccine didn’t seem so unexplained anymore.
when I coordinated our March of Dimes walk in 1996, they gave me a tour of the Salk Institute in La Jolla. Impressive place. Trying to use genetic to grow limbs etc.
Didn’t understand stem cell issue at the time, so didn’t know what questions to ask. Don’t know what they’re doing now.
The patio outside the cafeteria was on a cliff which lead to view of blacks beach (nude beach). I saw military choppers slow down as they flew by. It was quickly explained to me.
She met him because she was friends with his wife (Francois Gilot, who is the mother to some of Pablo Picasso's kids).
We have a lot of the correspondence from Salk... including some hand-typed studies he did while trying to come up with an AIDS vaccine. Based on his letters and things, it seemed like he was a cool guy.
I got my shots at the Auditorium in Spokane, Washington, there were thousands of people waiting in line.
Have either of you read "Dr. Mary's Monkey"?
I was going to add that my son goes to school with Sabin’s step grandson.
On “Inventor’s Day” the youngster dressed up as Sabin and showed the family pictures.
The one I remember most was Sabin sitting in his Alfa Romeo Duetto that the Italian government gave him for his charitable works.
I thought it should have been worth at least a Ferrari!
Lot of people today have no memory of this
disease.I believe that I was in those early trials too.
Had two friends in Elementary School that had polio.
One had a withered left arm,but that right arm was strong.
Used to see in magazines pics of those Iron Lungs.
Great discovery Dr Salk made, saved many many lives.
