Out of this dark week there has come very much that is good. And I am not just pointing to the very welcome spirit of concord the three political parties have, up to now, manifested in the Commons and outside. Nor the address of our three main political leaders, though again, their talks both in tone and content offered much to be regarded.
Rather I am thinking of the unofficial moments, captured on video or in photographs, showing people acting so well, in moments of great distress or at some levels of real peril to themselves. Even after three days, the very early scene of passersby, earnestly trying to care for Corporal Nathan Cirillo this was but mere instants after his being shot shimmers in the mind.
Everyone has seen that image, the huddle of people bent over him, and, as we have learned from news stories, even to his last breath assuring him that he was loved. It was very much the parable of the Good Samaritan in real and present time, only in Ottawa Wednesday morning, it wasnt one Samaritan. There were at least four.

Canada Ping!
Oh Canada! Isn’t it time that military guards posted at the tomb of the unknown soldier be equipped with loaded weapons?
Political correctness loses every time.
They should have a loaded sidearm. Could also be covered by a sniper or two.
I really wish they hadn’t tried to make this a reflection on Canada. It is a small, nasty event by a fanatic. A few people need commendation for their circumstances, either as victims or heroes.
But it says little or nothing about the national character.
There will always be small events, like this. So save up national character reflections for the big stuff.
158 Canadian soldiers died in the Afghan war.
Seventy years ago this month, the Canadians were doing the heavy lifting of throwing the Germans out of the Scheldt, so that the great port of Antwerp could be opened up for supplying the final historic blows against the German Reich. They also continued to do yoeman’s work in Italy.
They lost more than 45,000 men in WWII.
It was by the grace of God that only one person was killed. The video shows dozens of people running for their lives. The perp was only stopped when a good guy with a gun confronted him. Something the Canadian government does not legally allow for the “ordinary” citizen.
Apparently the ceremony before the RedBlacks game was something to see. Around 34,000 people there, including Prime Minister Harper, and during the moment of silence, you could have heard a pin drop.
The largest Canadian flag in the world was sent in from another town (Hamilton?), and when they sang the anthem, it was very loud, like a chorus. Everyone sang. I heard on the radio it brought tears to people’s eyes.
I do not think the War Memorial will ever be the same. In a way, it has been consecrated (and I chose that word with care, I don’t throw it around lightly).
#21.
The ceremonial gun is always kept unloaded as a tribute to the unknowns.

Agreed.
The way I see it, some loose command ashaoles in the Reserve /Regular military interface did not understand , even after international security warnings, that Canadas military was in danger, that gurads at the National Memorial needed to be armed, or at least have a magazine full of ammo for their rifles to defend themselves. They were guards in name only.
Thats a FAIL.
Also the fact that lone wolf Bebeau made it through the door of Parliament, without being fired upon by dozens of armed guards inside: FAILURE. Lucky Vickers was the there. Now what will happen when there could be a cadre of tangos in an organized attack? Dozens of politicians would die.......( but no one seems to are about that...go figure.)
Heads should be rolling but all thats happining is a CYA exercise in two languages. Soon others will die in two languages.
If anything the weakness of the Canadian goovernment and its poor excuse for security is shining through....and that is not the true Canadian character, which is obscured by the national group hug
syndrome. That and 25 cents will get many people dead
in the near future. The terrorists cannot believe ther good luck.
Count on it.
Canadian Greatness Shining through. Our PM foprced to hide in a closet? A yo9ung guard sacrificed because he and his partner were unarmed? Greatness shining through? BULLSHITE!
Look: Giving Vickers a medal is just not good enough. They should be CLONING VICKERS!
The way I see it, some loose lefty command ashaoles in the Reserve /Regular military interface did not understand , even after international security warnings, that Canadas military was in danger, that guards at the National Memorial needed to be armed, or at least have a magazine full of ammo for their rifles to defend themselves. They were guards in name only.

Also the fact that lone wolf Bibeau made it through the door of Parliament, without being fired upon by dozens of armed guards inside the door at the check point: FAILURE. Lucky Vickers was the there. Now what will happen when there could be a cadre of tangos in an organized attack? Dozens of politicians would die.......( but no one seems to care about that...go figure.)Every Canadian should be a Vickers, thats the way it used to be.
Heads should be rolling in Parliament but all thats happining is a CYA exercise in two languages. Soon others will die in two languages, but terrorist bullets and plastique wont be bilingual ( therefore they are not recognizable as a threat?). Thats what the thinking has been ever since that faggot psychopomp, liberal fascist Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the PM.Time to end THAT!
If anything the weakness of the Canadian goovernment and its poor excuse for security is shining through....and that is not the true Canadian character, which is obscured by the national politically correct group hug syndrome. That and 25 cents will get many people dead in the near future.
Thats the way it was with a lone wolf attack. Imagine a coordinated ISIS attack with suicide vests? Talk about our federal government being unprepared? And wallowing in it! SICK!
The terrorists cannot believe their good luck.
Count on it.
We need thousands of Vickers, and Canada needs to abandon its gun control mentality. The peons and commoners need to have the right to carry, which is provided for in the federal gun control law, but the provinces refuse to honor that.Time to correct that NOW. Make a few hundred thousand Vickers in the process, and then give him a medal.
That works.
