LONDON: One million doses of an Ebola vaccine will be produced by the end of 2015, the World Health Organization has announced.
Vaccines, "several hundred thousand" of which will be produced in the first half of the year would be initially made available to front line health workers in West Africa as early as by December 2014.
Dr Marie Paule Kieny, WHO assistant director-general, said: "While we hope that the massive response, which has been put in place will have an impact on the epidemic, it is still prudent to prepare to have as much vaccine available if they are proven effective. If still the massive effort in response is not sufficient, then vaccine would be a very important tool. And even if the epidemic would be already receding by the time we have vaccine available, the modelling seems to say vaccine may still have an impact on controlling the epidemic."
The third meeting of the Emergency Committee convened by the WHO director-general regarding the 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa was conducted on Wednesday.
This meeting was convened in advance of the three-month date of the expiration of the temporary recommendations issued on August 8, 2014 and their extension on September 22, 2014, owing to the increase in numbers of cases in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and the new exportation of cases resulting in limited transmission in Spain and US.
As of October 22, WHO said that the number of total cases stands at 9936, with 4877 deaths. "Cases continue to increase exponentially in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; the situation in these countries remains of great concern. The key lessons learned to control the outbreak include the importance of leadership, community engagement, bringing in more partners, paying staff on time and accountability.

Well I guess they can go back to eating bats and other obscure bush meat. Maybe they’ll uncover something really deadly and bring it here again.
RE: Great. Just one problem ... we’re still in October 2014
Also, DOES IT WORK?
Cool, what if the natives behead anyone coming at them with a hypodermic needle?
Anytime the government has a massive rush to create a magic bullet medical cure, I am reminded of the swine flu fiasco.
And prior to that the polio vaccine that was contaminated with SV40 (Simian Virus 40) and administered to millions up until 1961. Or even later, depending on who you choose to believe. I have my doubts that any of the entities involved have been completely honest.
It is also prudent to remember that the federal government was aware of the causative link between asbestos and mesothelioma for decades before it deigned to tell us. Ditto for the nuclear tests that military personnel were exposed to early on.
Faith is for God, not the government.
It balances out. The vaccine will be effective on the October 14 strain of Ebola.
“Great. Just one problem ... we’re still in October 2014”
Check out this article, written on 10/16, for what a vaccine will actually do, even assuming 100% efficacy:

In short, it is like trying to put out a forest fire with a single pail of water...but read the article, it explains it much better.
Not only that - how do they test the efficacy to be sure whether or not it works?
