Hospitals battle state over emergency care for undocumented immigrants

TALLAHASSEE — A coalition of Florida hospitals is challenging a state policy on emergency care for undocumented immigrants.

Hospitals in states that participate in Medicaid, the joint state-federal health insurance program, are required to treat undocumented immigrants in emergency medical situations.

In Florida, hospitals are reimbursed for those services by AHCA.

AHCA used to pay for all emergency care for undocumented immigrants deemed "medically necessary," according to a petition filed in the Division of Administrative Hearings last week by the hospitals. But since 2010, the agency has been paying only to the point of "alleviation" or "stabilization."

The hospitals argue that those guidelines keep AHCA from paying for many critical services.

The hospitals characterize AHCA's policy as "arbitrary and capricious." Erde, the attorney for the hospitals, said it is hurting her clients' bottom lines.

"Hospitals are stressed," she said. "Everybody is paying them less and less."

Simply solution, to the typical Democrat, medical centers make tons of money, so they will just have to make do with less.

They’ve been playing this game so long most hospitals can barely keep the doors open.

And while they do, they cut every corner they can. Isn’t that comforting? The place you count on to keep you alive, cutting every corner they can...

And now they worry about having to treat ebola patients sent there by DHS / TSA from the airport.

Yep. You’d be surprised what one single patient can do to the bottom line for the year also.

And with the illegals, you get thousands on your doorstep.

The basic problem with this is that hospitals should in no way be obligated to render treatment to anyone unable to pay, reimbursement or not. And this is not unreasonable, in that most major counties have county hospitals for the poor and indigent. So a simple rationale:

ERs only need to stabilize “emergent” patients who could die or be grievously crippled without immediate aid. But as soon as they are stabilized enough for transport to the county hospital, that should be the end of the involvement of the ER.

and the health insurance agencies in the US are now refusing to issue policies that cover Americans who contract Ebola. The transformational plan of which obozo spoke is coming to fruition and one critical change he failed to mention was his and the democrats ACA was designed to dismantle the health care industry. I understand the ACA is exactly the same plan they called Hillary Care when slick was in the WH.

Where have you useen this?

Not even close. As bad as Obamacare is, Hilarycare was far, far worse. Hilarycare was true socialized healthcare (single payer), whereas Obamacare is more of a public-private mix.

So true. The hospital nearest to me closed their doors a couple of months back for this very reason. That hospital was a regional hospital about 7-8 miles from me. The next nearest one is now about 23+ miles away. Bigger and better but now more or at least equally as financially stressed. I just wonder how long they can keep their doors open?!

What you don’t see is their efforts to buy the cheapest hip replacements, the cheapest sutures, the cheapest...

You get the picture.

So that we can accommodate the foreign freeloaders, the health care of all citizens is being compromised.

Progress...
